‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ wins nine critics’ awards, including best director and best visual effects; Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ wins best animated feature; Netflix series ‘BoJack Horseman’ wins best animation series.
Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller hosted the 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, marking the first time the annual awards show combined film and TV winners into one event. The awards, presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association, broadcast live on A&E, Lifetime and LMN from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on January 17.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was on hand to honor Industrial Light & Magic with the Critics’ Choice Genius Award, recognizing 40 years of work that has “changed the face of cinema.”
George Miller’s blockbuster that was the night’s big winner. After scoring an impressive 10 nominations from the Academy last week, Mad Max: Fury Road won nine awards from critics, including best director (for Miller), best action movie, best actor and actress in an action movie (Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, respectively), and best visual effects.
Among animated features, Pixar’s Inside Out beat out the studio’s The Good Dinosaur, as well as Starburns Industries’ Anomalisa, Blue Sky’s The Peanuts Movie and Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep Movie. On the television side, Netflix series BoJack Horseman took home the prize for best animation series from fellow nominees Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons (FOX), South Park (Comedy Central), and Star Wars Rebels (Disney XD).
