The MIFA conference in Annecy, France, kicked off seemingly well on June 14, 2004. However, the Electricians Union shut down the electric to the market for an hour as a protest of the French government's plans to privatize the electric industry. The protest was timed to hit the festival because of the attendance of French Minister of culture and communication Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. Much like the protests that often accompany the Cannes Film Festival, the animation industry is no longer an outsider in this French tradition.
