Palm Springs International ShortFest Winners Announced

Animated shorts honored at the 2024 festival include ‘The Car That Came Back from the Sea’ awarded Best Animated Short; and ‘Wander to Wonder’ receiving a ‘Special Mention’ in the same category and a win for Best Midnight Short.

The 2024 Palm Springs International ShortFest has announced its juried and audience award winners. Awards and cash prizes worth $25,000 were handed out – five winners gained Academy Award eligibility – to films chosen from a pool of 310 shorts in the Official Selection. The festival ran June 18-24, 2024.

Event categories celebrating animated shorts included “Best Animated Short.” Check out the winners and special mentions for animated shorts:

Best Animated Short – winer received a $1,000 cash prize. (Oscar qualified)

Winner:

  • The Car That Came Back from the Sea (Switzerland) by Jadwiga Kowalska

Special Mention:

  • Wander to Wonder (Netherlands/France/Belgium/United Kingdom), by Nina Gantz

Best Student Animated Short - winner received a $1,000 cash prize.

Winner:

  • On the 8th Day (France), by Agathe Sénéchal, Alicia Massez, Elise Debruyne, Flavie Carin, Théo Duhautois

Special Mention:

  • Bug Diner (U.S.) by Phoebe Jane Hart

Best Midnight Short winner 'Wander to Wonder.'

Best Midnight Short - Winner received a $1,000 cash prize.

Winner:

  • Wander to Wonder (Netherlands/France/Belgium/United Kingdom), by Nina Gantz

Special Mention:

  • Worst Nightmare: Dream Creep (USA), by Carlos A.F. Lopez

Kids’ Choice Award - Winner received a $1,000 cash prize.

Winner:

  • Mog’s Christmas (United Kingdom), by Robin Shaw

Local Jury Awards:

Desert Views Award Sponsored by Silvercrest – Winner received a $1,000 cash prize.

Special Mention:

  • Madeleine (Canada), by Raquel Sancinetti

Audience Awards - Best Animated Short - Winner received a $600 cash prize.

The Palm Springs International Film Society mission is cultivating and promoting the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness. The Film Society produces the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) and Film Awards every January and Palm Springs ShortFest in June.
