THE TRUE STORY OF SAWNEY BEANE about a cave-dwelling Scottish cannibal family won the McLaren Award for New British Animation at the 59th Edinburgh International Film Festival. The six-minute film written and directed by Elizabeth Hobbs and co-produced by Katja Anderson for Red Kite Animations and Michael Fukashima for the National Film Board of Canada in association with Scottish Screen.
The short uses charcoal and soft washes of watercolor on paper to bring the 16th-century Scottish legend about young Sawney Beane, an infamous cannibal in the kingdom of James VI, to life. Following the death of her elderly husband, Mrs. Beane sets off on a long journey from Fife to Galloway to find her cannibal son Sawney.
