Moynihan was a native of Albany, NY settling in numerous places throughout his life including Coeymans Hollow, Syracuse, New York City, Washington D.C., and Cambridge, MA. He was the son of the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Using the pseudonym Mendl and Gus Murphy for his creative work, Moynihan's comic strip “New Thermos” appeared in upstate weeklies including The Mountain Eagle and Phoenicia Times in the Catskills. He drew political cartoons, and illustrated a music history “Rock 'n Woodstock” in 1994. Moynihan also worked as a sculptor and created props for off-Broadway theatrical productions. The M. Prize award was created by his family and friends to keep his legacy alive.
