In addition to continuing to produce full CG animation for features and TV, Starz Animation Toronto has now established two new units - live-action visual effects and stereoscopic 3-D.
With the hire of key personnel from recently shuttered C.O.R.E. Digital studio in Toronto, like vfx supervisors Bret Culp and Terry Bradley, Starz Toronto Visual Effects has embarked on several vfx productions currently in progress. First up is the high-end vfx work for the ambitious cable series, CAMELOT, for Starz Entertainment and Graham King Productions, which is an epic re-telling of the classic King Arthur legend, set to air in 2011.
Simultaneously, it is beginning vfx production on the title character for the theatrical feature, ROBOSAPIEN, a live-action family adventure being produced by Avi Arad and Steven Paul at Crystal Sky Entertainment. More live-action/character animation hybrids are in the works as well.
In the 3-D realm, the studio has been fully equipped with workstations, render resources and screening facilities to create state-of-the-art stereoscopic features and TV. Its recently staffed stereoscopic unit, under the technical direction of Ken Ouellette and creative oversight of Eric Deren, is currently creating the "second eye" for the Miramax/Rocket Pictures production, GNOMEO & JULIET, planned for wide 3-D release in February 2011. Based on building blocks and tests conducted over the past two years, the studio has now assembled a full crew and pipeline.
