An Oompa-Loompa in a jar? A trailer has finally dropped for the Willy Wonka prequel film centered on a young version of the chocolatier (played by Timothée Chalamet) on his first fantasy confection journey. Viewers now have a look at the new generation of Oompa-Loompas (played by Hugh Grant), and they are tiny.
While we have known of the prequel since 2016, the project faced numerous delays, including a COVID-19 shutdown. Most recently, the film was delayed from a March 17, 2023 release to December 15.
Watch the first official trailer for Wonka, powered by pure imagination and ambition, now:
Wonka is directed by Paul King (Paddington) from a script by King and Simon Farnaby, with original characters created by Roald Dahl. King recently revealed to EW that the film will be a musical, a genre which is, “very dear to his heart,” and will feature highly choreographed dance sequences.
Starring alongside Chalamet and Grant in the prequel flick are Olivia Colman; Keegan-Michael Key; Sally Hawkins; Rowan Atkinson; Matt Lucas; Mathew Baynton; Paterson Joseph; Farnaby; and Jim Carter.
Cate Adams (Barbie), Rosie Alison (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas), Tim Wellspring (Paddington 2), and Michael Siegel (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) executive produce, while David Heyman (Barbie, Harry Potter), Alexandra Derbyshire (Paddington 2), and Luke Kelly (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical) produce.
The deliciously sweet VFX are created by Framestore, with Dominic Sidoli serving as Production VFX Producer.
Wonka is expected to hit theaters December 15, 2023.
