ka-chew! Expands Director Roster

Celebrating 10 years, ka-chew!, the commercial production company owned by multi Emmy Award winning creative giant Klasky Csupo, Inc., is adding directors and directing teams to its roster.

ka-chew! specialties include CGI, 2D, stop motion, motion design and live action combo.

Six Point Harness, Parallex Studio, Seattle-based independent filmmaker David Russo, directing team Paul Cummings and Tony Fiandaca, Elliot M. Bour, Liz Blazer and Carolle-Shelley Abrams were all signed by ka-chew!

Jetix Europe Teams with Studio B on New Series

Jetix Europe N.V. today announced the launch of the zany animated comedy series KID VS. KAT. Created by Rob Boutilier, the series is being produced by Canada-based Studio B Prods. Inc., a DHX Media Ltd. company, in association with Jetix Europe and Canadian kids broadcaster YTV.

Tippett Studio Animates Cloverfield Monster

Tippett Studio created the mysterious monster that destroys New York City in Paramounts record-breaking CLOVERFIELD. The Tippett team was helmed by Visual Effects Supervisor Eric Leven, while Tom Gibbons, Chris Morely and Steve Reding were the creative leads that completed key dramatic and complex vfx shots involving the monster and the deadly parasites, integrating them expertly within photographic and digital environments.

Director Romanek Exits Wolfman

In a bold move, director Mark Romanek has exited THE WOLFMAN redux just weeks before filming was set to start, leaving Universal in a hairy situation, report the trades. The studio and ONE HOUR PHOTO director came to an impasse over the budget, which the studio demanded come in under $100 million, because of the film's potential R rating.

THQ Acquires Big Huge Games

THQ Inc. today announced plans to acquire Big Huge Games, a leading development studio focused on the role-playing-game genre, a multi-billion-dollar market segment.

Big Huge Games was founded in 2000 by four veteran game developers, Brian Reynolds, Jason Coleman, Dave Inscore and Tim Train, who together have brought strategy gamers such titles as RISE OF NATIONS, ALPHA CENTAURI, and CIVILIZATION II. Key studio members also include Ken Rolston, a 25-year RPG design veteran whose most recent designs include ELDER SCROLLS IV: OBLIVION and ELDER SCROLLS III: MORROWIND.

Blue Sky Moving to Connecticut

Blue Sky Studios has announced that it is relocating its studio from White Plains, New York to Greenwich, Connecticut. The studio plans to have its 300 employees moved by the end of 2008. Additionally, thanks to the film-industry tax credits passed recently by the General Assembly, Blue Sky is eligible to receive up to 30% of their expenses exempted.

Mocap Studio Opens at UCF

Vicon Ent.'s Los Angeles-based House of Moves has launched a new state-of-the art motion-capture studio at the University of Central Florida on the grounds of the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, UCF's graduate video-game development school. The 3,500-square-foot studio, one of the largest on the East Coast, is described by House of Moves executives as a "world-class facility" for industry professionals and academia.

Aardman Launches Digital Animation Degree

Aardman Animations' co-founder and executive chairman David Sproxton CBE officially opened University College Falmouth's new Digital Animation Studio at its Tremough Campus on Friday. Sproxton met staff and the first group of students in the College's new BA(Hons) in Digital Animation, as well as key figures from the regional animation industry, before delivering a keynote address that touched on how the world-famous studio is now using digital animation techniques alongside their more traditional model animation processes.

New Line's much anticipated THE GOLDEN COMPASS opened in less than spectacular fashion with an estimated $26.1M for the weekend ended Dec. 9, 2007. CBS Films Enrolls in Beastly

CBS Films has optioned the supernatural high school novel BEASTLY, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Set in the modern day, the book tells the tale of a teacher who is cursed by a student, which turns him into a hairy beast. Alex Flinn wrote the book, which HarperTeen published this past fall.

With the writers strike still in full swing, the project has no screenwriter, but the studio hopes to have the film ready for winter 2009.

Studio B Acquired by DHX Media

DHX Media Ltd, parent company of distributor DECODE Enterprises and production houses DECODE Ent. and Halifax Film, has acquired Vancouver-based Studio B Prods. Inc.

The deal sees DECODE Enterprises handling international sales of Studio B's productions. To date, Studio B has amassed a library of 400 half-hours of children's programming. DECODE Enterprises currently handles distribution for DHX subsidiaries DECODE Ent. and Halifax Film, as well as third-party producers.

Smith Micro Software Acquires Poser

Smith Micro Software Inc will add the popular e frontier 3D graphic and animation solutions Poser, Anime Studio and Manga Studio to its growing lineup of products. Smith Micro will acquire ownership and distribution rights to these and other e frontier assets for $6 million in cash and anticipates the deal to be close in the fourth quarter of 2007. e frontier had total revenues in excess of $7 million for their fiscal year ending March 2007.

Sanjay Das Named CTO of Tippett Studio

Sanjay Das, formerly director of R&D at DreamWorks Animation, has joined Tippett Studio as CTO. Prior to Dreamworks, he was the director of Research and Engineering at Loudcloud/Opsware and before that spent nine years at HP in various management and worldwide leadership positions.

Studio B Walks Dogs and Kats to MIPCOM

Studio B Productions has signed a production order for 26 episodes of KID VS. KAT, a 26x22 comedy series for kids 6-11 about the exaggerated conflict between a demonically malevolent cat and the beleaguered ten-year-old boy who has become its unwitting nemesis. The property was developed internally at Studio B and originated from a short titled LOOK WHAT MY SISTER DRAGGED IN that screened at MIPCOM Jr. in 2006. The series is currently in production with YTV for a Fall 2008 launch.

Starz Opens State-of-the-Art Animation Studio in Toronto

U.S. media company Starz, LLC has announced the opening of one of Canada's largest studios and the appointment of veteran animation executive David Steinberg to run it. Initially the studio will have 150 employees, but it is expected to grow substantially as new projects begin production. The studio will produce computer-generated animated feature films and more.

Studio Arts to Offer Tra-Digital Animation Training with Toon Boom in Fall 2007

Studio Arts has announced it will be offering a full suite of training classes using Toon Boom Animation's Digital Pro and Storyboard Pro software. The intent of the beginning-to-advanced training courses is to provide 2D animators and other artists a thorough grounding in Toon Boom's "paperless" animation system. Toon Boom courses are due to start Oct. 6, 2007 and, along with CSATTF and ETP funding, there will be "scholarship seats" for each class that are fully-funded by Studio Arts.
