The ancient storytelling tradition is kept alive in Detroit with live performances and members of ‘Flying Cardboard Theatre’ hosting free workshops.
Detroit Cantastoria Fest returns November 17 and 18, featuring local artists and activists collaborating on “cantastoria” and “cranky” storytelling traditions. The ancient form of street theater involves a narrator singing or telling a story while gesturing to elaborate painted banners or scrolls.
Members of Flying Cardboard Theatre host free workshops teaching the ancient art form, giving participants a chance to make or perform in cantastoria and cranky shows.
This year's festival shows include: "What Makes Us Safe," a show about surveillance technology, and "Kathe Bradi,” a dramatic traditional Greek ballad. The raucous and thought-provoking weekend of performances features a diverse group of new and classic cantastoria and cranky pieces.
Enjoy live music and refreshments and check out the Cantastoria museum.
Tickets are available at the door – November 17 and 18; doors open at 7:30 pm, and the show starts at 8:00 pm.
Suggested donation: $10-$20.
