Oscar Week Events Highlight Animated Feature & Short Film Nominees

Animated Feature event to be hosted by DreamWorks Animation producer Bonnie Arnold; USC School of Cinematic Arts professor Tom Sito to host Animated Short Film event.

LOS ANGELES -- In the week leading up to the 91st Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of public programs celebrating this year’s nominees in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Animated and Live Action Short Film categories. Events will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

OSCAR WEEK: SHORTS
Wednesday, February 20, 7:00 p.m.

Hosted by Academy Short Films and Feature Animation branch governors Jon Bloom and Tom Sito.

Bloom produced and directed the live action short Overnight Sensation, which earned him an Oscar nomination. He founded his production company, BloomFilm, in 1987 after two decades in the entertainment industry. Sito, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, has worked on numerous films, including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Shrek, Osmosis Jones and Garfield.

The Best Animated Short nominees are:

  • Bao – Pixar – Domee Shi
  • Late Afternoon – Cartoon Saloon – Louise Bagnall
  • One Small Step – Taiko Studio – Andrew Chesworth & Bobby Pontillas
  • Weekends – Past Lives Productions – Trevor Jimenez

Please note this event is sold out. There will be a stand-by line at the west doors of the building (nearest Almont Drive) on the evening of the program. Stand-by numbers will be given out at approximately 5 p.m. The number of stand-by tickets available (if any) will be determined shortly before the start of the event.

Arnold, a producer at DreamWorks Animation, produced the Oscar-nominated films How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2. Her additional producing credits include Pixar’s landmark movie Toy Story, Disney’s Tarzan and DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. She served as co-president/president of feature animation at DreamWorks Animation from 2015 to 2017.

The Best Animated Feature nominees are:

  • Incredibles 2 – Pixar – Director: Brad Bird. Producers: Nicole Paradis Grindle, John Walker.
  • Isle of Dogs – Fox Searchlight – Director: Wes Anderson. Producers: Scott Rudin, Steve Rales, Jeremy Dawson.
  • Mirai – GKIDS – Director: Mamoru Hosoda. Producers: Genki Kawamura, Yûichirô Saitô, Takuya Itô, Yûichi Adachi.
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet – Disney – Directors: Rich Moore, Phil Johnston. Producer: Clark Spencer.
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – Sony Pictures Animation – Directors: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman. Producers: Phil Lord, Chris Miller.

Tickets are available online at Oscars.org. Tickets to the Shorts and Animated Features events are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID (Shorts limited to four per person). Doors open one hour prior to each event. All ticketed seating is unreserved.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
