'Never Give Up, Never Surrender…' on a Franchise! Rumor has it the accomplished sci-fi actress will return as Gwen DeMarco in the spinoff series as a mentor-like figure for a new generation of cast members aboard the Protector.
Finally, a morsel of news from the Paramount+ series adaptation of Galaxy Quest! While the project has finally made headway after a stint in production hell, we can now report that Sigourney Weaker will reprise her role as Gwen DeMarco, according to a source close to Giant Freakin Robot. Gwen will serve as a mentor-like figure for a new generation of cast members aboard the Protector, if the news is to be believed.
The original Galaxy Quest film followed an alumni cast of a space opera television series who play their roles in real life when an alien race needs their help. However, they also must defend both Earth and the alien race from a reptilian warlord.
The cult hit starred Tim Allen, Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni, with a script by David Howard and Robert Gordon. The film’s VFX were produced by ILM; Bill George served as VFX supervisor, with Stefen Fangmeier as co-VFX supervisor.
The upcoming series is not the first planned adaptation project; a sequel was in development at Amazon with the film’s original writer Gordon and director Dean Parisot attached. The film was also set to star the original cast as the washed-up group of actors.
Unfortunately, development was put on ice after Rickman’s tragic passing in 2016. Hopefully, with Weaver’s supposed return, more original cast member announcements will soon follow.
The Galaxy Quest series will be produced by Mark Johnson under his Gran Via Productions banner. No other execs have been announced.
