New FUNimation Channel Offers 24-hour Digital Anime Network

FUNimation Ent. a wholly-owned subsidiary of Navarre Corp., launched the FUNimation Channel today (Sept. 29, 2005), a 24-hour, digital network that will feature distinguished anime programming from FUNimation's anime brands. Working with OlympuSAT, one of the leading distributors for independent programming in the U.S., the channel will be available to video service providers throughout the nation. The plan is for the FUNimation Channel to be part of the basic and extended digital packages, so it will be a regular channel in the lineup.

G4 Acquires Three Anime Series From ADV Films

G4 - Videogame TV has acquired anime series RAHXEPHON, CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL and COLORFUL from ADV Films. The futuristic action-packed series RAHXEPHON premieres first as part of G4's all-new late-night TV block, Barbed Wire Biscuit, on Sept, 2, 2005, at 12:00 am ET/9:00 pm PT.

Animation Declining in Japan

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has released an updated report on the status of the Japanese animation industry. Surprisingly, the anime market sales in Japan declined from a high of 213.5 billion yen in 2002, to 191.2 billion yen in 2003 (a 10.4% drop). There are about 430 anime production studios in Japan, with 264 of them concentrated in greater Tokyo and 70 of those are in the Suginami district.

Appleseed DVD Sales Surpass Expectations

Geneon Ent. reported that DVD sales of APPLESEED have exceeded expectations with more than 85,000 units sold to date since the titles May 10 release, setting a new standard for anime titles released in North America, and shaping up to be one of the top anime releases of 2005.

Geneon Releases Kyo Kara Maoh!: Vol. 1

On April 19, 2005, Geneon Ent. released KYO KARA MAOH!GOD (?) SAVE OUR KING! VOLUME ONE on DVD. The series is based on the Japanese novels that have sold more than two million copies. Presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen and featuring animation produced by Studio Deen (R.O.D. OVA, RANMA 1/2, RUROUNI KENSHIN OVA), the DVD features include textless opening animation and character data files. Each of the nine volumes will include a limited edition collectible animation cel. Suginami Anime Pavilion to Reopen

The Suginami Anime Pavilion will reopen at the Suginami Animation Museum on March 5, 2005, reports Anime Blogzine. The exhibit closed April 2004 for renovation and expansion.

The newly renovated museum will have expanded space for exhibits, a workshop, theater and anime library. Special exhibits will be held four times a year, starting with the special opening exhibit GUNDAM -REKIDAI NO KIDOU SENSHI.
