B1 Media Launches Games Division

Los Angeles-based design studio B1 Media has launched a games division, B1/Games, and hopes to develop products for set-top game consoles. B1 Media has primarily been a provider of interactive design for DVDs and has created games and interactive content for numerous DVD titles like DINOSAUR, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE and PLANET OF THE APES. The company also recently launched a broadcast design division, B1/Broadcast.

Fluid Launches Sound Design Division

New York-based design and visual effects company Fluid has launched a sound design division and added sound designer Fred Szymanski to their team. Szymanski has created sound design and special sound effects for a variety of film and television projects and music videos. He will be creating sound design for commercials exclusively through Fluid. Szymanski and Fluid recently completed sound design and sound enhancement for a series of spots for 6 new Xbox games for McCann/NY client Microsoft.

Click 3x Creates Graphical World For AT&T

Click 3x, New York has designed and produced two new graphics only television spots for AT&T and Young & Rubicam. One spot, cut to the Roy Orbison classic You Got It, features lines of type traveling in graceful arcs across the frame. As the camera pulls back it becomes apparent that the viewer's perspective is from the inside of a transparent sphere and that the type is moving along its surface. Periodically, lines come into focus and announce AT&T long distance options. Ultimately the camera pulls out of the sphere to reveal it as part of the AT&T logo.

Western Images Designs Complete Package For ShopNBC

Western Images has completed work on the new ShopNBC campaign. The design package includes an animated logo, 12 promos, 12 show opens, banners, billboards and lower thirds and a "toolbox" of elements for additional programming. The treatment features a montage of 3D objects, plus male and female models depicting moments from a range of lifestyle activities, which in turn provide the basis for the different shows on the network. To achieve an illustrative graphic look for the live-action, the models were filmed against green screen to separate them from the background.

Sideshow Names New Creative Director For Motion Design

Sideshow Post announced that award-winning computer graphics artist Jonathan Herbert has joined the company's Sideshow Motion Design division as creative director. Herbert comes on board after seven years at the helm of Zero Degrees Kelvin, his well-known New York City production boutique that specialized in 3D animation for TV commercials, product and science demos. Herbert has seventeen years experience in directing and managing 3D and special effects projects.

Blur Studios Adds Another Creative Director

Blur Studio has hired Tim Brown as their new co-creative director of the design division. Prior to Blur, Brown served as creative director of the design and animation house, RezN8. Brown's work on CBS's coverage of the 1998 Winter Olympics helped the project earn two Sports Emmy Awards for graphic design and technical innovation. Brown said, "Here, we have a design engine that is integrated with a production engine. Very few design firms have direct access to 3D animation and visual effects production, or to artists of the caliber we have at Blur.

Dosch Release New Products

Dosch Design has just released several new products, including version 2.0 products from its state-of-the-art Dosch Textures line. Rust & Metal, Stone & Concrete, Skin, Industrial Design, Broadcast-Design and Special-Effects now include many additional textures, plus a large number of textures which are provided in even higher resolution than in the previous version. The products have been expanded for a wider variety of contents and will soon be supported by the new Dosch Design InfoBase, which will be established on the Dosch Design Website.

"SUPERSTARS! Of Animation & Design" is a two-night multimedia event that explores the people behind influential design and animation in pop culture. The event features talks and multimedia presentations by animation and graphic design students from The Art Institutes International at San Francisco. Kathi Georges, graphic design instructor at the school and creative director of Alphanetics, will host it. The topics for Tuesday will be Swiss Design, Movie Titling, Japanese Design, Psychedelic Media, Manga, Intuitive Design and Grafitti.

Goodspeed & Associates, Inc. has promoted Patrick Bennett to the newly created position of design director. Formerly a designer with the company, Patrick will be responsible for the daily overseeing of all creative work. Before joining Goodspeed over a year ago, Patrick held a variety of creative positions in graphic design, Web design and consulting for several magazines and cultural institutions, such as ESQUIRE, VANITY FAIR and Dia Center for the Arts. "Patrick has proved an invaluable asset for our rapidly growing company," said agency owner Bill Goodspeed.

The American Institute of Graphic Art (AIGA) is presenting their 6th Annual Y Design Conference. The theme of the event is "Connectivity" and will focus on how graphic designers and artists can use their talents to reach the community and support important causes. Additionally, LINK scholarships will be given to underprivileged youth pursuing careers in design on Saturday at 3:45 pm. The event will take place at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art from 9 am - 5:30 pm.
