Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Names New Board
At this weekend's ComicsPRO Annual Meeting, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund announced changes to its Board of Directors. After five years of service as President and seven years on the Board, Chris Staros has stepped down from the organization to devote more time to the growth of Top Shelf Prods. Chris Powell, General Manager of Lone Star Comics, and President Pro-Tem of ComicsPRO, will take over the presidency.

Wachowskis Land Ninja Funding in Germany
Director James McTeigue, producer Joel Silver and the Wachowskis have landed funding for their next project NINJA ASSASSIN from Germany's Federal Film Fund, reports VARIETY. Federal Film Fund will pony up 5.8 million Euros ($9 million). Previously, it gave the Wachowskis $14 million for SPEED RACER. NINJA has also received $1 million from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, a Berlin subsidy organization that helped fund McTeigue's last film, V FOR VENDETTA.
Weinsteins Kicks Into Asia with Tarantino Remake, Production Fund
The Weinstein Co. and Goldman Sachs are forming a $285 million fund to make films with Asian themes, insiders say. One of the projects will be a Quentin Tarantino-directed remake of the kung fu classic, COME DRINK WITH ME. The fund will also support the production, acquisition and marketing of approximately 31 Asian productions -- 21 theatrical features and 10 direct-to-videos -- over the next six years.
Think Corp. Starting Animation Fund
Japanese animation firm Think Corp. has set up a limited liability partnership fund to raise money for animation production and equity finance, reports VARIETY. The Y2 billion ($17 million) fund will hold an investment period of seven to nine years. Think will put in $854,700 with the Japanese government pitching in $8.54 million and the rest coming from private investors.

Gravity Falls for Online Game Development Fund
Seoul, South Korea-based Gravity Co. Ltd. announced that it has decided to invest 1 billion Japanese Yen in "Online Game Revolution Vol. 1," an investment fund organized in Japan. "Online Game Revolution Vol.1," with a total proposed investment size of 10 billion Japanese Yen, has an investment objective of investing in companies that develop online games in Japan. Movida Investment Inc., an affiliate of SoftBank Group, will operate the fund as the general partner of the fund. Several Japanese and Korean developers of online games, including CJ Internet Corp.
U.K. Toon Fund’s Prospects Look Good
The prospects are looking good for a national animation fund in the U.K., according to Jonathan Peel, chair of Millimages UK and chair of the animation policy group of the British producers association PACT.

Studio B Gets Second Season Request On 3 Series
Vancouver-based Studio B Productions has announced that all three of its animated children's series currently airing on Canada's national television have been picked up for another season. "Were very proud to have all three of our original shows picked up for national broadcast," said Blair Peters, partner and founder, Studio B Productions. "There's a lot of competition out there and we're pleased that kids have responded well to our characters and stories." Greenlight Media To Launch $100M Animation Fund
Berlin-based Greenlight Media and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein are about to launch the second Berlin Animation Film fund (BAF) to raise US$100 million for the production of up to five international animation features. Greenlight's COO Nickolaus Weil said that BAF II will fund two $30 million-budgeted features from U.S. studios and three $10 million-budgeted features from European-based companies. Director Oarr Leaves The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund
Chris Oarr has announced that he is resigning as executive director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Oarr headed the CBLDF, a non-profit organization protecting First Amendment rights in the comics industry, for more than three years. "It's been great working for such an important cause," said Oarr. "And I feel like we've accomplished a lot. The Fund will continue to stand ready to provide the highest quality legal advice and service to the comics' community.
Report Calls For Canadian Television Fund Revamp
A Canadian Television Fund (CTF) commissioned report calls for stiffer conflict-of-interest rules for the distribution of their CA$200 million in funds. Two reports, one by consultants François Colbert and David Silcox for CTF and one by KPMG for the Heritage Ministry, pointed out several serious administrative problems in the way Canadian funds are handed out to production companies. Both reports recommend that Telefilm Canada, a second government agency that helps fund and produce Canadian productions, should get out of the funding business and concentrate on producing feature films.
Filmmakers Call Foul To Canadian TV Fund
Independent film producers are calling foul over the amount of funds going to Quebec. French-language productions are guaranteed at least a third of the CA$200-million a year provided by the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) and Quebec-based film companies this year are receiving nearly 40% of the federal funds. Another sore point is that in years past Cinar Corp., the Montreal-based producer of childrens series, has received as much federal funding as the entire Alberta industry. Currently, Cinar is under investigation for using false Canadian names on scripts by U.S.
