18th EuropaCinema & TV - Viareggio Film Festival

The Europa Cinema & TV - Viareggio Film Festival started in 1984 as a live-action, feature film festival. Since its 15th edition, EuropaCinema & TV has programmed animation to encourage its interaction with live-action cinema. The festival features a selection of 12 European animated shorts; each of them is programmed immediately before a feature film in competition. All works submitted must have their Italian premiere at the festival.

Triple Oscar winner Richard Williams has won over 250 international awards including numerous Hollywood and British Academy Awards. His films include WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, THE CHRISTMAS CAROL and the original THIEF AND THE COBBLER animated feature. After his presentation, The Animator's Survival Kit-Why This Book?, Richard Williams will show the opening of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, discuss his work and his new book and run other video clips.

RICA/Wissembourg Animated Film Festival

The RICA (Rencontres Internationales du Cinema d'Animation) is a competitive festival promoting animated film and filmmakers. For its 4th edition the festival will present 250 short and feature films. The official competition will include several feature films and about forty shorts. Five prizes will be awarded, including: the International Jury Prize, Children's Jury Prize and Best Feature Film Prize. Film formats for submissions are: 35 mm (preferably), 16 mm and BetaSP (No Digital Beta). There is no entry fee.

Nightmare Before Christmas - Special Screening

Tim Burton's stop-motion masterpiece, directed by Henry Selick, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS will be screening for two weeks (Oct. 19 - 31) at Hollywood's historic, restored movie palace The El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. This is an annual Halloween tradition. On the first night, Friday Oct. 19th, Jerry Beck will be moderating a panel of guests on stage in a Q & A about working with Tim Burton on NIGHTMARE, VINCENT and FRANKENWEENIE.

ASIFA-San Francisco presents an evening with ILM Director Tom Bertino. Tom is currently working as animation director for DreamWorks "The Time Machine" He joined ILM in 1986 and has worked on over 40 features. Tom's experimental digital animated 35mm short "Work In Progress" will be screened and he will discuss his latest projects. Sally Cruickshank's "Make Me Psychic" will also be shown. Tom did ink and paint on this film and it was his first professional job.

Little Miss Spider Event and Screening

A special screening and presentation on the making of the computer animated film "Little Miss Spider" - directed by Diana Walczak and Jeff Kleiser based on the book by David Kirk - will be held at the Scholastic Store in Soho on Saturday, October 6th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

David Kirk will read, present his new toys and sign books. Diana Walczak will give a slide presentation on animating Little Miss Spider. The voice of Little Miss Spider, nine-year-old Marichal MacDonald, will make a special appearance.

Giant Screen Theater Association 2001 Conference & Trade Show

Kinetica 3: A Tribute To Hy Hirsh and the Beat Generation

Renowned character animation artist Nancy Beiman has worked as a character designer, storyboard artist, producer, animator, director, illustrator, caricaturist and animation teacher for studios in England, Germany, France, Denmark and the U.S.A. Her independent film YOUR FEET'S TOO BIG won a Cine Golden Eagle. Her articles on animation appeared in CARTOONIST PROFILES. Nancy Beiman is currently teaching animation at the SCAD. She will be at RMCAD for a 3-day in-class participation and the ASIFA-Colorado presentation of her work. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at RMCAD.

Vancouver Film School Presentation
