Events: Screenings

The 8th World Animation Celebration (WAC) will present awards to the best new animated works from around the world. Events include; The World Animation screenings; The World Animation competition; The Animation Hall of Fame ceremony; six one-day animation business conferences; four days of animation seminars and classes; two days of animation career planning sessions; The World Animation Marketplace and Recruitment Expo; The Battle of the Animation Studios Synchronized Swimming Teams; networking parties and receptions; and a one-day animation educators conference.

Mati Kutt has worked in animation for over 25 years, perfecting several unique styles and techniques. His award-winning films have been shown internationally. His presentation will include excerpts from his uniquely original, personal and powerful drawn, painted and puppet animation films as well as additional samples of Estonian animation. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at RMCAD. RSVP by June 25, 2001.

Join the Vancouver Film School (VFS) for a presentation of their 3D, classical and Maya programs; see award-winning student work; bring your portfolio for review and meet the roadshow team. The evenings will include refreshments and prizes. Flashbang announces FLASHBANG 3, the third installation and screening of cinematic and interactive Flash films. The event will feature cinematic Flash films shown on the big screen, as well as kiosks allowing attendees to explore interactive Flash media up close and personal. All films will also be added to flashbangonline.com after the show. Along with Flash based media, submissions of non-motion digital art will also be accepted for viewing in Eleven50's gallery the evening of the event.

ASIFA-Hollywood is presenting a screening of Hollywood Cartoons in Technicolor, hosted by animation historian Jerry Beck. The show will feature rare 16 mm prints of classic cartoons, one from each Hollywood cartoon studio during the golden age of animation. Each cartoon is complete, uncut in vivid 3-strip IB Technicolor. You cannot see this on TV, video or anywhere else! The event will begin at 7:30 pm. The entry fee will be US$2 for members and $5 for non-members. Seating is limited.

Edward Bakst is the international animation department chair at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design (RMCAD) and the founding president of ASIFA-Colorado. At the event, he will announce the upcoming ASIFA-Colorado events and guest speakers, present his own award-winning animation and discuss creative goals behind his work. He will also address objectives that animation professionals, students and the art community must strive for, and how these issues are vital to the local animation arena, commercial or independent. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at RMCAD. RSVP by May 14, 2001.

WigglyWorld presents a full week of great works of direct animation (cameraless filmmaking). Guest curator, direct animator and instructor Devon Damonte has been making direct motion picture graphics on 16mm and 35mm film for fifteen years. WORKSHOPS include: Saturday, May 5 and Saturday, May 12: Hand-Made Animation Workshop, an in-depth, hands-on two-part workshop exploring practical methods for experimenting with hand-made film; and Tuesday, May 8: Navigating The Festival Circuit - How can media artists make sense of the ever-increasing numbers of film festivals?

The Getty Research Institute is presenting a symposium on the avant-garde works of Harry Smith. Best known to cinephiles for his experimental films incorporating ingenious original techniques of collage animation and painting directly onto film, Smith also distinguished himself as a painter, well-known musicologist, anthropologist, linguist and magician. The Friday event will run from 9 am - 5 pm and the Saturday event begins at 9 am and concludes at 3:30 pm. A film screening will take place on Friday at 7:30 pm.

The second Outer Limits Film and Video Series is a collaboratively organized series of short experimental, documentary, animation and independent narrative film and video, with an emphasis on work from the far geographic and cultural reaches. The 2001 series will focus on (but is not limited to) three areas of the global experience: global tourism and tourists; individualism, eccentrics and vernacular culture; and time and distance. Outer Limits is organized by Video Lounge, the New York Animation Festival and Perimeter Media + Culture Projects.

To celebrate the release of the new Nik Phelps and the Sprocket Ensemble CD "Fetch," Sprocket Ensemble is holding a musical animation party. The CD features songs from the group's popular animation/music shows at the Minna St. Gallery. Musicians on the CD include violinists Carla Kihlstedt and Irene Sazer, singer Connie Champagne, bassist Matt Small, tubist Zachariah Spellman and eclectic horn Nik Phelps. New films by Sandra Gibson and Chris Lanier will be screened, along with David Michalak's film INNA MINNA. Admission is US$10 general and $7 for students.
