Hollywood Cartoons In CinemaScope

The Museum Of Modern Art in New York presents a Cartoon Research screening May 17th and 18th. Featured in this exhibition are eleven of the best CinemaScope Hollywood cartoons of the 1950s and '60s. Toot Whistle Plunk & Boom, which won an Oscar, was Walt Disney's rejoinder to the success of United Productions of America (UPA), the upstart bicoastal studio that had introduced stylized graphic animation in counterpoint to the Disney studio's cartoon literalism. UPA produced CinemaScope cartoons of its own, including two gems from 1956,

The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design 2002 Grad Show opens on Saturday, May 4th and runs until May 17th, at 1399 Johnston St. on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC, Canada

Animation and Integrated Media works are screening on an ongoing basis in the South Building Lecture Theater, room 328. The Animation program will screen daily at 12:00pm, and the Integrated Media program will follow it at 1:30pm. Animation students are exhibiting storyboards, background drawings, puppets, etc., in the North Building, room 243.

The Capilano College Animation Grad Show is an annual exhibit of student work from the two year, Commercial Animation program (classical)and the eight month, Digital Animation program (3D). Both professional level programs focus on character animation and design. Students and faculty will be in attendance and the winners of Capilano College's four studio-sponsored scholarships (Atomic, Nelvana, Studio B and Bardel) will be announced.

10th Annual Midwest Animators Conference

Sponsored by ASIFA Central, the conference features speakers who focus on various aspects of animation production. The emphasis for many of the presenters is the personal and artistic influences in their work. Another feature of the conference is screenings of various animations as well as open screenings for attendees to show their work. The winning student entry of the HVH World Peace Storyboard and Animation Competition is screened and the new winner is announced.

West Coast Student Film Festival

The West Coast Student Film Festival invites all college, university and graduate student filmmakers around the globe to submit original work into the competition. There is no entry fee. Categories for entry are: Animation, Fiction and Non Fiction. This year's theme is "Overcoming Obstacles." Entries may be shot on any format but must be submitted in 1/2 inch VHS format. The festival will be featuring several winning films from each category, as well as top films in areas of cinematography, editing (sound/visuals), directing, acting, screenplay and soundtrack.

Animac 2002 is an international annual animation show that celebrating its 6th edition from the 14th to 17th of February 2002 in Lleida, Spain. Animac is a non-competitive event that is a platform for the best animation from all times to be screened and in which the animation cinema researches new ways of experimentation and dialog between the different artistic disciplines. Carolina Lopez is leading the project as artistic director and Animac image is created by Carles Porta. Lleida's culture department and a good qualified coordination team support this event.
