French illustrator and graphic designer adopts Japanese printing conventions to spotlight this year’s guest country of honor.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has unveiled the poster for its 2019 edition, which runs June 10-15, by French illustrator and graphic designer Charlotte Gastaut.
Spotlighting this year’s guest country of honor, Japan, Gastaut’s design draws the viewer into a Japanese dream with the impression of movement, lightness and contrasts, and lacustrine reflections.
“The idea was to harmonize the themes of this year’s Festival (Japan, cuisine), Annecy and animation, all within one image,” Gastaut says of the inspiration for the design.
“I worked on my design by adopting the Japanese printing codes: color graduation, mist and space. I conjured up the sense of animation with the movement of the floating leaves, the time passing with day and night,” she added. “Cuisine is brought to life through the acidulous colors and the rice grain print on her clothes. Annecy, with the lake, and the mountains reflected in the water. Just like that, the poster was born!”
Born in April 1974 in Marseille, Gastaut studied at the ESAG, a graphic design school in Paris. She designs for newspapers, advertising agencies and trend agencies, collaborating with brands such as Fendi, Diptyque, L’Occitane, Van Cleef & Arpels, Godiva and Hermès. She more recently began writing and illustrating a series of books including “Le Grand Voyage de mademoiselle Prudence,” “Poucette” and “Peau d’âne,” and is currently developing additional titles employing paper cut-outs.
Now she is dipping into writing and book illustration: Le Grand Voyage de mademoiselle Prudence, Poucette and Peau d’âne, have seen the light of day. With other publishing companies Charlotte is developing her books using paper cut-outs. In 2017 she launched her own brand of illustrated silk scarves, Charlotte Gastaut Collections.
