Sharon Katz, creator of HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANNAH (Audience Choice Award, Chicks 'n Flicks Film Festival), has finished her newest animated short, THE ANGEL'S FOOT CAKE / DER FUS TORT. In the film, Drinkeleh Fresserkeh decides to make a cake in the shape of an Angel's foot. The Angels take umbrage and the fun begins in this delightfully raucous modern Yiddish animated tale. The film premiers April 29, 2001 at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

SKYY Short Film Awards

SKYY Vodka has partnered with the American Cinematheque to launch the SKYY Short Film Awards, to celebrate excellence and vision in the short film format. Short films may be entered into four categories: fiction, non-fiction, animation and a special themed category for films that contain a "cocktail moment." The competition is open to anyone 21 years and older and there is no fee to enter. The SKYY Short Film Awards Grand Prize will be $5,000 to the winner of each category.

Father & Daughter Wins Clermont-Ferrand Fest

The Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival has announced its winners. Michael Dudok De Wit's FATHER & DAUGHTER took home the award for best international animated film. Receiving the prize for best French animated short was Florence Miailhe's AU PREMIER DIMANCHE D' AOÛT. AtomFilms sponsored both of the animated short categories. The jury was comprised of Wasis Diop, Qu-Dok Hwang, Cédric Kahn and world-renowned director of AT THE ENDS OF THE WORLD Konstantin Bronzit. Over 136 films were in official competition from over 50 countries.

Academy Announces F/X Short List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the short list of films being considered for the Visual Effects Oscar. The seven films chosen were CAST AWAY, DINOSAUR, DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, GLADIATOR, HOLLOW MAN, THE PERFECT STORM and X-MEN. Fifteen-minute clip reels from each of the seven films will be screened for the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee on February 7. The members will then pick three of the seven films for nominations. Those nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 13, at 5:30 am.

Original-Cut Pete's Dragon Arrives On VHS & DVD

Disney is releasing for the first time PETE'S DRAGON in its original theatrical 135-minute cut. Hitting stores on January 16, 2001, the VHS and DVD will have a restored and remastered video and audio track. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song Score and Best Song for "Candle On The Water." The story follows lighthouse keeper Lampie (Mickey Rooney) and Nora (Helen Reddy) as they try to save Pete (Sean Marshall) and his pet dragon Elliot from his cruel foster mother Mrs. Gogan (Shelley Winters) and the scheming quack, Dr. Terminus (Jim Dale).

Raimund Krumme Wins German Film Prize For Short Film

Affiliate animator Raimund Krumme won the German Film Prize, Gold, for short films, for his new short "The Message." The prize comes with a cash prize of DM 60.000 (approx. $50,000). "The Message" is a 6-minute film where the message, "He is back again" is passed on to many people until there is a discussion about who is back again; it was in competition at the Annecy, Ottawa, Cinanima and Holland festivals. AtomFilms Brings Shorts Back To Theaters

AtomFilms has signed a deal with Century Theatres to screen six short films before each feature showing at the newly opened CineArts 6 in Evanston, Illinois. This move is part of Atom's plan to spur other theater chains to start screening shorts. The screenings also provide eligibility for the short subjects to be nominated for the Oscar, which could gain even more exposure for Atom and its film library. Harry Warren, AtomFilms' VP of broadcast and theatrical distribution, said, "AtomFilms strives to provide the best exposure for its talented filmmakers.

FUDWUPPER Short Screening At Storyopolis

Berkeley Breathed, author of the book EDWURD FUDWUPPER FIBBED BIG and director of the upcoming CGI adaptation, will be on hand at Storyopolis book store to sign books before the screening of the short. The new short film is produced by Storyopolis Productions and Nickelodeon Movies and is scheduled for a fall theatrical release. A surprise reader will be on hand to read the book to visitors. The short features the voice talents of John Cleese, Haley Joel Osment, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara and Osment's sister Emily.
