Flatlife Short Wins Jury Prize At Cannes

With the big feature animated films INNOCENCE and SHREK 2 being blacked out by the large shadow of Michael Moore and his Palme d'Or winning FAHRENHEIT 9/11, the animation world has one thing to cheer about out of Cannes and that is the Jury Prize for Short Film going to Jonas Geirnaert's FLATLIFE. The animated short by the young Flemish director follows a number of people living in an apartment building who rather unintentionally make each other's life difficult. Short Film Screening in Plymouth

Harry Tates bar in Union Street will be holding a short film screening. Plymouth Art College students, Darren Horne and Jason Tinsley short film, A BIRD'S EYE VIEW will be part of the presentation. The five-minute film combines live footage with stop motion animation and computer generated imagery, exploring the themes of balance and the boundaries between life and death, the spiritual and the physical.

Bent Image Lab Signs Director Yu

Director Lisa Yu, a rising talent with a unique sensibility for stop motion animation, is the latest addition to Portland-based animation/live action production studio Bent Image Lab's stable of directors. While stop motion animation is most often used in comedy or lighthearted applications, Yu's 2002 independent short, VESSEL WRESTLING, applied the technique to make a dramatic and thought-provoking film about passion and sex. The short's arresting imagery won her numerous accolades and awards, as well as the attention of the partners at Bent.

Annie & Boo Big Winner at 2004 Imagina Awards

Winners of the 2004 Imagina Awards, held Feb. 2-5 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, have been announced, with the German short, ANNIE & BOO, snagging four, including the Grand Prix. The jury panel, chaired by Stan Winston, consisted of Ornella Barreca, independent producer (Italy), Tom Jacomb, producer (Vanguard Animation - U.K.), Thomas Langmann (producer and actor, BLUEBERRY - France), Marc du Pontavice (ceo of Xilam Animation -- France) and William Sargent, (ceo of Framestore-cfc - U.K.).
