The Illustrators: The British Art of Illustration 1800 - 2007

For 25 years, The Chris Beetles Gallery has been famous for promoting the art and history of illustration, and this exhibition marks the pinnacle of its efforts. "The Illustrators" will feature 1,000 pictures on the wall, 200 years of art history, and a 450-page, museum-quality catalogue.

Starting with Thomas Rowlandson, visitors will navigate their way through Regency satire to the era of Victorian PUNCH illustrations, when artists like Sir John Tenniel, George Du Maurier, and Linley Sambourne entertained the public with their witty, accomplished cartoons.

Betsy Streeter Presentation

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts cartoonist Betsy Streeter, creator of BRAINWAVES and THE MOMMY TRACK'D FUNNY PAPERS on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, as part of its ongoing Cartoonist-in-Residence program. Museum visitors will have the chance to watch Streeter at work and chat with her about cartooning. This event is free and open to the public.

Tens of millions of "white-collar" workers play casual video games, many while on the job, according to a survey released by leading multi-platform games provider PopCap Games. While white-collar workers' consumption of casual games at home mirrored the overall casual gamer audience fairly closely, the survey revealed some surprising facts about the playing of casual games in the workplace -- and the motives behind the activity.

CafeFX Builds Character Animation Branch

VFX house CafeFX is branching out into character animation, which will be headed up by Academy Award-nominated animation supervisor James Straus. The move is a reaction to an increased demand for the company's character animation work following its participation on PAN'S LABYRINTH.

Gatchaman to be Penned by Robert Mark Kamen

According to Imagi, Robert Mark Kamen will be writing the screenplay for GATCHAMAN, to be produced as a CG-animated motion picture by producer Lynne Southerland and director Kevin Munroe (TMNT). The CG work on GATCHAMAN will expand the visual boundaries of action sequences and dynamic camera work. Kamen's credits include 18 produced feature films, including THE KARATE KID and its sequels, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, TAPS, A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, THE PROFESSIONAL, LETHAL WEAPON 3, and KISS OF THE DRAGON.

The Work of Chris Shepherd

The BFI Southbank is hosting the "The Work of Chris Shepherd + THE WHITE BUS." The event will take place at The National Film Theatre and is chaired by onedotzero director Shane Walter.

Chris Shepherd, co-founder of London animation company Slinky Pictures, has made such films as DAD'S DEAD, WHO I AM AND WHAT I WANT (his collaboration with David Shrigley) and SILENCE IS GOLDEN. Shepherd will talk through his films and discuss his influences, particularly the work of Lindsay Anderson, director of THE WHITE BUS.

Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga Exhibit

The Asian Art Museum is hosting an exhibit of the work of Tezuka Osamu. On display will be his work for ASTRO BOY and KIMBA THE WHITE LION. This exhibition -- the first of its kind outside of Japan -- features more than 200 works by Tezuka including original drawings, covers and posters that trace the artist's development, the television and anime series inspired by his work, as well as his adult-oriented manga. The exhibition was curated by Philip Brophy and is a National Gallery of Victoria touring exhibition in association with Tezuka Prods.
