Larry posted his thread for animators for peace. But what have you done.? As an artist I've always felt the need to make my stance known. But I catch flack for being political...but if we can't make our stance known and share our views who are we.
Maybe we could use this thread to list our links to projects, animations we have made in the past speaking to our sentiments. From 9/11/01 to today I was hoping that the US would look past the attack and look at the motivation...but that hasn't happened, instead we promised things we couldn't provide, unless it was to corporate providers. Iraq is no better off, in fact they are suffering from hardships that weren't present before the US intervention. I lived through the Vietnam conflict. We were going to save them from communism. What are we saving Iraq from? I have lot's of questions.
I made this shortly after 9/ll hoping things wouldn't escalate.

It is only when you view the world with a human face, that you can understand their viewpoint.

Remember Arnold bringing up the Chinese boy in front of the tank, at the convention. Did the administration do anything about it...? But the Republican's are trying to ride on his heroism. It's time that those of us that remember call them on it. China gained "Most Favored Nation" status. No sanctions were ever called into place.
I stand by this piece:

Just to put things in to perspective. George H. Bush was president at the time. America didn't state their outrage...instead we waited a year and granted them "Most Favored Nation" status for importing purposes. We don't even know this young man's name. But Arnold and the republicans want to lay claim to his sacrifice. I am offended.

Do you also realize that that the US military is being used to protect independent corporate interests...not the Iraq populus. Many of our troops are being used to escort these interests along their way. They can bail when the going gets rough, but not the military troops--they are there until they get recalled. Many of our troops are being put under corporate oversight. It's time we ask questions...all of us.

Hello.
I believe there are a few concrete alternatives we have:
1) Know who your State and Federal Reps and Senators, Delegates, etc. are and write to them - often if you deem it necessary.
2) Make sure you vote - they all really do count.
3) Follow the GOLDEN RULE: TREAT OTHER FOLKS THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED. That includes on the street in forums, everywhere... (don't mean to pontificate here) ...the most we can do is to resolve ourselves to treat everyone better and be more tolerant of the ideas of others. As individuals we can all be better, peaceful folks.
Thanks.

Great thread Phacker,
I once did an animation expounding the rights of women, I called it 'From the silence come our words...shut the hell up and listen'. I also used the wizard of oz characters in a parody of the republican administration's treatment of issues like women's health, affirmative action, etc. (The lion became the elephant, dorothy was a hooded and tied victim) I hope I've learned a little finesse since then  . My current project, although entertaining (I hope), still deals with issues like female representation in popular media and the appropriation of the female body within visual history, it also questions our capacity for fabricating pseudo-archetypes which de-humanize women. And since you asked, I have to add, again, the 'personal is political'.
In my personal opinion, there is always a link between totalitarianism and the abuse, subjagation and killing of women.
RE: Larry's 3rd point. It's so ironic, because I just resigned from a forum called Indieclub. I was reluctant to join at first because I had read some potent threads. I posted my thoughts and was convinced by other members that the post I read had been the exception to the rule. I had gleaned some good technical info and was not disappointed, then, POW, chairs flying, bottles crashing, verbal assaults, fisticuffs in the forum!!! I could not believe what members were saying to each other. Yes, I've heard it all, but it was the total DISRESPECT they showed. I think a good barometer for forum etiquette is(To paraphrase what Larry said) to say to ourselves, 'would I say that to this person if they were standing right in front of me.?
I would also like to add that it is so comforting to come to a forum where people RESPECT, rather than demean what you're doing.
Animation, or film, nuh- uh, not me, not in that vein mate. Kinda like "I'm want to use my modelling career to bring about world peace" I say shut the F_____ up miss america.
I spent sometime in the kicking around the streets of S.A. They got a lot of what us "Victorians" would call, urchins, down there.
Done a bit of feeding the homeless and suchlike. No mother theresa mind you.
Rebelhill,
You said, "shut the F____ up Miss America'.
Maybe YOU should learn a little finesse. I'm assuming you read all the posts in this thread, yet I'm the only one you insult and how ironic that is, considering the thead's topic???!!!!?!? You don't know who I am, would you say this to my face?
You have a REALLY nice day, Rebelhill!!!!
Well, here I go again  . I'm sorry Rebelhill. I misconstrued your posting-I thought you were paraphrasing the title of my animation and thereby ridiculing what I said. And to further illustrate my stupidity, I thought you were referring to YOUR modeling career (as in 3-d).
I WILL READ AND COMPREHEND A POST BEFORE I REPLY.

Yes, I'll say what everyone's thinking, (I) should have followed the 'golden rule'.
I'm probably the only one that's tired of everything being political. Everyone has to inject their political beliefs in their music, movies, animation, writing, etc. It seems that now days, if you create something political, you automatically get a spot to showcase your stuff no matter how bad it is. That's why I'll just continue to create shorts that are ORIGINAL and not jump on the political bandwagon. My political views are as useless to others as much as other people's views are useless to me. I can care less what anybody's political views are and I HATE when others feel the need to push their beliefs on me. If I want to read about someone else's political beliefs, I'll go look for it. I don't want to see it on a website that has nothing to do with politics like AWN.
Hello.
Speaking directly to Phacker... I did create a project in 1994-95 called ANIMAGIC. It brought together 16 kids from the North of Ireland and 16 kids from the South of Ireland to make a film about their cultural Heritage.
Eina McHugh exec. produced and I directed the film and added animation to join the segments together.
We all spent a week in Belfast talking about the "problems" going to see the Catholic and the Protestant sides of town and their murals. I was the moderator of the discussions because I was not from either side. After two days together the kids were up until 2:00 am talking it out and trying to solving the North-South problem.
At the end of the project everyone gathered in Dublin...to finsh animation and shoot their work on the cameras at Senior College Ballyfermot.
The film premiered on Dec. 11th 1995 in Belfast at the Cinemagic Film Festival. Bob Hoskins introduced the film. I edited the film and was not there for the screening - my dad had pasted away and I decided to be back in the States to be there for Mom - so I took a job with Disney.
My current film OUR WORLD talks about the world and Love, hate and our culture.
thanks.

pat - really great thread. me, i just tend to my world view and hope it shows up in everything i do. i used to do projects in emerging economies for sustainable cultural programs - but that needs living there and now i live here and am just trying to sort it out.
larry - fantastic project. any encore projects under consideration, considering the process stilllll goes on?
eugeneromero - i'm chuckling out loud - how political of you to complain about the political:) in animation. some of us - okay, me - think we are simply political creatures and some of us - okay, me - think that any time an artist of any sort chooses to communicate any idea at all, he/she has taken on a political role. ramones, was it, you animated? some of the easiest-breeziest entertainment has been political and frankly, who better to tap into the popular culture and illustrate ideas about what the world can look like than artists.
here's a great thread - you just can't avoid it! if you figure that monty python and the holy grail so accurately follows L'Mord d'artur then it's just interesting to consider that the Arturian legends drew fairly heavily from the troubadors or story telling techniques of the heretics. good golly, miss molly - that ol' inquisition thang - it just doesn't GET more political. http://forums.awn.com/showthread.php?t=793
One could argue that seemingly innocuous Pre School animation is a form of political statement - a kind of subtle social engineering to convey the message that the world is a lovely place - nothing wrong with that, but one has to admit the Teletubbies have a rather sinister dimension to them.
Most feature animation has totally lost its teeth though, due to the pressures of corporations and multinationals who really want us to buy fast food and other stuff...
I think it's appropriate to keep the world innocent for those who'd think it so.....but I do think they overdo it a bit.......I always liked when I was younger and my friends would joke about the brainchild behind Sesame Street, where someone who was like a big dumb adult (Big Bird) would actually talk to kids like they weren't stupid.......an idea......and then have a supporting cast of vampires and monsters where you'd least like to see 'em...
As for the second part, I don't watch anything that looks like it has no teeth....I like the past 15 years where adults can gather entertainment from a "family" film too.....Otherwise it's just feature-length pre-school animation...of a sort
I don't think peace and respect have to be political...I think it's part of being a considerate/feeling human being. If we all got back to that feeling, would there need to be wars? Not for me, because I don't need power or money to feel secure in myself.

Larry, I'd just like to say thank you for what you did for the the split in northern Ireland. My Gran was a protestant that came from there to do menial labor in America...and along the way converted to Catholicism...I can't explain why she converted, she died when I was way too young to understand, but she would have hated what happenned there. I think she converted to marry...but I'll never know for sure. But the death of innocents (children or otherwise) would have been abhorrent to her.
