I have to vote for Howl's also, I just wish I had more to say about this subject.
I haven't seen Howl's so I can't speak to it, but I hope Wallace and Grommit win. I think it kinda depends on how people are judging. If it's about story, Wallace and Grommit for sure. If they are judging artistic, then I'd have to give it to Corpse Bride. I'm kinda shocked Madagascar and Chicken Little didn't make the cut. Does anyone know how many movies need to be nominated befor they up the finallist? 3 finallists just doesn't seem like enough.

I was wondering the same thing for SFX. There were plenty of them on the short list (and plenty more that could have made it).

For features, there has to be at least eight qualified films to trigger the category, which is three nominations. To get five nominees, there has to be 12 or 16 qualified films (I forget which).
Check the Academy's site (www.oscars.org). I'm sure the rules are there somewhere.
Joe, thanks for your "too much spam" thread.

Dunno how I missed Corpse Bride and W+G, stop-motion is the shiznittobangsnipsnapsaq. Good stories don't hurt either. It does sound like the category is slimmer than it should be. I can't blame them for passing over Steamboy, but... do they reveal all 8 contenders?
ive only seen The curse of the ware rabbit out of these choices. Corpse Bride comes out on DVD pretty soon doesnt it? I will have to check it out asap.

I'd like to see all three but so far only have Corpse Bride under my belt.
From what I hear Wallance and Gromit has overall, well-rounded greatness, whereas Corpse Bride is generally considered to have "moments" of entertainment greatness, and mostly banks on artistic prowess.
It's a great night for audiences because you can't go wrong with one of them winning, but maybe an "eh" night for the two people that don't win that night because they have just as much right to in my book (as far as what I've been exposed to)...
I'll just have to row against the current and say that "corpse bride" is my favourite of the three. "Howl's" is a beautiful film and I really loved it but, it isn't as powerful as "Spirited Away" and "Wallace and Gromit" well, it falls short of all of the expectatitons that I had for an Aardman film (so did "Chicken Run"). Sure it was fun and had great animation, but, with so many interesting different and styles that they had going is such shorts as "humdrum", "pib and pog", the "Rex the Runt" series and (my very favourite) "Loves me not", why did they sell their souls to Dreamworks and did yet another Nick Park film composed of cut up jokes from the great old originals?
Bring back "the tortoise and the hare"!! :D
P.S: if that wasn't enough Aardman is now making yet another Nick Park style film, but now in cg. How uninspiring is this? http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-01-31-flushed-away_x.htm
"check it out, you know it makes sense!" http://miaumau.blogspot.com/
I've seen all three of the nominees and most of the other animated features that were released this year.
Given what there is to choose from, those three are pretty good choices.
Corpse Bride is tedious and forgettable.
Howl's is slightly better than W&G, but neither are all that good. I'm guessing W&G will win, since Miyazaki won already, a few years back. W&G will collect the pity vote for their burned-down studio.
(If Howl's wins, that would be quite a victory for anime. Maybe Hollywood would start writing more sophisticated stories for animation.)
Looking ahead, there's going to be a glut of 3D movies this year: 14 scheduled for release, so far, and most of them don't look very good. :( Flushed Away and A Scanner Darkly sound sort of interesting. Who knows?
did u guys hear that news that the next aardman/dreamworks proj is not goin to be done in stop motion, but 3d made to look like stopmotion?

it's called flushed away... looks the same as the other nick park films, only it's in cg... :(

I have nothing against Aardman doing cg, they have a really nice piece with three alien characters presenting a programme that I really like, but I do feel sad because, they keep on using the same Nick Park buck tooth designs over and over again... I have nothing against it, I think that the original "Creature Comforts" short is one of their best films, but I just wish that they would explore other options. Or else it will just look like they are stuck in either a time warp or a Nick Park-o-land.

I don't belive they're taking the Disney route and totally giving up clay animation for CG. It's just somwething they wanna try. I find nothing wrong about it.
James
They're not. It's just that the story that Aardman came up with (so, yes, the story originates with them) involves so many sets and so much water that it's impossible to do in stop-motion. So that's why we're doing it all in CG. I think it's a brilliant piece so far and looks wonderful. Aardman is still doing other pictures in stop-motion (for instance, Crood Awakening with John Cleese).
I agree that there's a glut of 3D movies coming out, but if anyone deserves a chance at make a 3D movie, Aardman does.
They aren't going to abandon stop-motion, so just calm down. Hopefully this will make them a stronger and more influencial studio.
BTW, I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but Aardman has a TV show headed for CBS based on Creature Comforts. Hopefully it won't be as bad as Father of the Pride.
hit british show?
i've never heard of it and i've lived here...like my whole life.
i need to start watching t.v. again :D
as for aardman cg thing yeh i'm not against it,i just don't want them to get too used to it :p
i wanna see how it turns out.

Aardman has had other series as well (7 total, according to their website), so check 'em out.
I don't see anything wrong with Aardman incorporating CG into it's stop motion either. In fact, another film, the great 2D film Triplettes of Belleville had some things done in CG as well. It was mostly things like vehicles or solid objects that were moved around (like that bicycle wheel spinning atop an Eiffel Tower statue). Or, as one of my animation teachers said "It's nice to see CG used to do the grunt work that most animators don't want to do." :p

CGI in 2D features is nothing new.
In 1990, there was CGI in Beauty & the Beast, Jetsons the Movie, and The Rescuers Down Under. There has been CGI in 2D features ever since.
I don't believe Aardman is incorporating CGI into stop-motion, Hare-Devil, unless I missed a press item. We're discussing Flushed Away, which is a fully CG movie.
Congratulations to stop-motion.
Much as I like W&G and stop motion, Howl's would get my vote. I wasn't that fond of Corpse Bride.
Well, Triplettes was just one example. Actually, before 1990 there were at least two other 2D features that used CG for effects. Those being The Great Mouse Detective (c. 1986) and Oliver and Co. (c. 1988).
Aardman's doing a full CG feature you say? Intriguing. I'm hoping it wasn't a corporate decision to do this. Are there any heartless/brainless suits running the place?

What IS wrong with Aardman doing CG? I remember when everybody was surprised when Will Vinton Studios did those M&M's in CG. Its no big deal... just another type of pencil. The important thing is that it's Aardman... I think they're gonna show us all that Pixar isn't the only 3D powerplayer around....

That list sums it up for me pretty well, especially for corpse bride, I am overjoyed i just got the dvd myself! No commentary from burton but there is a music only track and a ton of other special features i need to delve into. Any of you guys check out corpsebridedvd.com? I hope the desktop maggot is available soon.
Them doing CGI isn't as disturbing to me as them turning to features. I'm still of the mind that Aardman is much better at making short films (<30) than they are at making features. So far, while technically great, I've left the theater feeling like their features are actually 1/2 hour shorts, stretched out to feature length. Meanwhile, their short films are some of the funniest, tightest, and well crafted movies around.

I realize there was CG in 2D before 1990. Those were just three examples.
The earliest use I'm aware of is The Black Cauldron in 1985, although it seems likely it was used in short films prior to that.
Well, according to Jason Scott - a few posts up - Aardman acknowledges that it would be too difficult to make this movie in stop motion with all the water they need on the sets. Particle effects - liquid, smoke, and fire - are difficult and often unconvincing in stop motion, but they're pretty easy with CG.
They also have an opportunity to create vast sets when they want to. This is another limitation of stop motion. Most stop motion sets have to fit on a large table, hence the snug or claustrophobic feel of most stop motion scenes. Characters on the set need to be easily accessable for the animators. For example, you couldn't have a bunch of characters running around in a deep, elaborate maze of pipes.
Nick Park has never lost when he's been nominated for an Oscar. Check that; he did lose once - to himself. "A Grand Day Out" was nominated the same year that "Creature Comforts" won. I used to joke that if I was nominated the same year as Park, there would be no point in attending the awards. :D
It'll be interesting to see if the streak continues...
Big shout out to "Pib and Pog". Don't know why that isn't on DVD anywhere; it's one of the funniest shorts they ever did. And the "Rex the Runt" series is the only DVD we've ever rented from Netflix and then went out and bought...
oops sorry for throwing the thread off topic guys hehe.
