Pixar @ the MOMA

If anyone can get to NY to see the PIXAR retrospective at the MOMA they should. The show revolves around the concept and pre-production process of all the studios work up to CARS and includes earlier work such as the Wally B short directed by John Lasseter. The exhibit really doesnt have much to do with "3D" technology, but focuses more around the artists who weild said technology, that being said its a great tribute to the hard work that goes into these films and really dismays the myth that "3D" animators rely solely n their technology. Maybe you left coasters see this stuff more often then not, But us New Yorkers (and East Coasters) are truely privelaged to have this catalog available to us. Get away from the screens folks!

Well...My students consider themselves "Post Post Modernist" and "Conceptualist". It was how I was raised within the arts myself. Ironically it wasnt until I got away from academia that I found how much I really loved animation. Not to blast colleges, they are afterall how i make my meager salary, but I feel that art history has a narrow cannon of focus and isnt receptive enough to anything that some art critic hasnt overhyped. This is the stuff that people like myself are jaded with as students.

Moving on , its too bad the show is closed, maybe I could scan the artwork from the book and pamphlet and showcase it on another thread. But not until I read the fine print. Dont wanna get sued.

I was lucky enough to be in New York to see it. Really beautiful art!! It really made my heart sing to see all the sculptures and storyboards, and how fascinated all the little kids there were.
I picked up a book there for $30.It was published by Chronicle Books. It'll be interesting to see how much it goes for on ebay, not that I'm going to sell mine. :p

Yes- I'm so glad I turned away from studying to be a painter. Art school would've molded me into a different beast, no doubt. If you don't mind me prying, where do you teach?

Wise. MoMA was pretty strict on pictures and cameras at PIXAR's request. I don't think they could sue you unless u made money off it somehow. But they sure as hell could make u cease and desist...

I teach life drawing and figure painting at Yale, my alma mater. They dont know my secret life as a fledgling animator.

today was the last day of the show. I knew I'd kick myself if I missed it, so I went kinda last minute. Blown away, man!

So many wonderful works. I knew they did amazing concept stuff, but the boards and animatics were incredible! Blew away most 2-D shows in their pre-pro...

I wish I would've gone eariler, I coulda picked up the book!

There is a book? Is it the same one that I have seen in the books store or is this one only for the museum?

It's a specific museum book, made to go with the exhibit. I found one on ebay- I'd link to it, but I don't want the competition :)

It is a great book. I passed it around one of my classes, but my students are a little artsy fartsy to appreciate that great art isnt only painting.

That's a shame. You should whip them inta shape! :D There are too many mediums to study only one.

Man, most of Pixar's stuff is so painterly I'da thought they would jump on it anyway. Particularly the color story pastels stuff, or the acrylics color tests.

Link, you need to give a link. I, for one, am lazy. :D
Well I will try and find the article. Thanks for posting, I like articles like this.

Sorry about the lack of linkage, I havent actually read any articles about the show, but I attended and it was great, however the pixar website itself has a link.
