Congrats to Oscar winners Nick Park and John Canemaker. Wallace and Gromit was a bit of a shoo-in, and I was thrilled when they announced Canemaker. If you have a chance to see "The Moon and The Son", be sure to catch it. It's a deep, personal film done in a unique style, and feels much shorter than it's 28 minute run length.
Hear hear! Btw his film will be on cinemax in June, not showtime as I posted previously.
Congrats Nick!
He brought back traditional animation in a big way with W&G...
(I wanted Corpse Bride to win the award, but well... )

I'm very happy that Canemaker won.
Does anyone know where we can view his acceptance speak online?
i'd love to see his speech too - i missed seeing the awards on tv. john was one of my animation instructors @ nyu my junior & senior years (his 1st & 2nd years teaching there.) he's a really decent fellow & a good educator. i'd love to see his film too - i don't have cable. oh well...
i liked their bow ties. haha. It was awesome how they had little ones to put on the oscars!
As for the shorts...I have always wondered...is there a place that shows each short nominated or something? because the only ones that are ever really presented in a public space are the pixar ones.

YES!! I'm elated that Canemaker won, he's a gentleman and a scholar. It's also nice to see some hand-drawn animation get some recognition again.
As to where to see the films, it's hard. You have to track down screenings or wait for some kind of release. I know The Moon and the Son will be on showtime sometime in June, and I can't wait to see it...
They do get shown publicly, but you have to keep your eyes open and search out non-traditional venues.
For example, our local ASIFA chapter screened 'One Man Band,' '9,' 'Jasper Morello,' and 'The Moon and The Son' over the last couple of months. The 'Jasper Morello' screening included a Q&A with the filmmaker, and that short will be showing again this week during the annual Cinequest independent film festival in San Jose.
I haven't seen their film yet, but they were great, and I loved their bow ties and their comment about traditionally drawn animation.

I love the fact that they give the animation awards early. Cuts down on the suspense.
I've got that song stuck in my head. Cuz its hard out here for a.... damn! Can you believe that song won?
And a year where no Pixar folks got a nod. You just can't predict this Academy. I love it.
Congratulations to Nick Park and John Canemaker.

Canemaker remains a very underappreciated animation scholar (though animation in the USA remains pretty unappreciated overall). I read his book about Felix the Cat that completely redeemed Otto Messmer from under the somewhat slimy shell of Pat Sullivan. Great book, great story. Out of print, of course.
And Wallace & Gromit finally received the recognition they deserve. Hopefully the series will continue (another film in... say... five years?!?!).
Wha...? Every W&G film ever made has been nominated for an Oscar, and they've won 3 out of 4 times (the only loss was to "Creature Comforts", another Nick Park creation).
What recognition do you feel they are lacking?
The one I can't get out of my head is that guitar bit from Brokeback. Hopefully now that the Oscars are over it'll get played less and less.
Probably public recognition.
I know I would love to see more of Wallace and Gromit. An animated series would be amazing.

Yeah I would like to see his acceptance speech again. I was very happy that a 2d animated short got accepted. 2D animation forever!!!!! :)
:D 2D Animation FOREVER:D
Congratulations to John Canemaker and Nick Park on and Steve Box on their oscars.
I didn't get to see John's film at Annecy - but we did get a chance to chat a fews times. He a great guy who deserves everything he receives. Whether he,s a teacher, historian, writer, leader or filmmaker- John does all of them very, very well.
Thanks.
