Entering a short into the Oscars

I have a short animated film I would like to enter into the Oscars and i've looked all over the internet trying to get information on this subject but can't seem to find any. If anyone here has some links or info they could share with me regarding eligibility for submitting to the oscars it would be much appreciated. Thanx again

I think you have to be a member of the screen actor's guild to nominate.

Actually it's the Academy of Motion Pictures:

Ballots are sent out to members of good standing. Even if you aren't a member you can lobby the membership like they do in Washington, if you run with that group. But your lobbying campaign should have started way earlier this year.

One way you can qualify is by sending your film to Laemmle Theatres. They have a qualification program set up where you pay a "small" fee to have your film screened along with other hopefuls, thus meeting the requirement of having your film publicly shown at a Los Angeles theater. Here is some information about that: http://www.laemmle.com/qualification.php

I think the fee is about $300, but I'm not exactly sure.

Looks like it's all pretty easy and cheap until you get to the final balloting. Then ya gotta come up with the cash for a film print. Work in a hi resolution from the outset, folks...;)

wow thanx for the quick responces. Great info and links. Much appreciated :)

What's the guarrantee these guys aren't just collecting fees for no guarrantee that your film will be considered. I am not sure what their role is. Before you send the money verify who they are. Looks like some small time agent that may not be able to guarrantee inclusion.

Ask for contacts phone numbers and give them a call before you go that route.

They are definitely legit. Basically, their role is just to screen your film for a period of time in LA, which is one way to qualify. I know that a number of people did it this way last year, including the winner John Canemaker.

Now, just because you qualify, doesn't mean you'll get too far in the process. They whittle it down a number of times before you get to the final five that are nominated.

Seconding what Arna said. Laemmle is a theater chain that has been around for some time. Personally, I think it's great that they offer this service. Otherwise, the independent short film maker would have to jump through many more hoops to qualify their film for consideration.

Another way to qualify is enter/win another film festival as listed in the oscar rules on short film festivals
