me, too. I think the 3 finger convention got started to simplify the drawings and take a few pen strokes out of the process, thus saving money/time.
There's also appeal in the soft appearance created by three rounded fingers and a rounded thumb, like a teddy bear or something...

It is my understanding that 3 is bad luck in the orient, putting that aside I think you should chose whatever works best for your character. If you are going to have some full screen shots of the hands, then maybe...
If your human character is more realistic (like in anime), then go with 4 and a thumb. For a cartoonier figure (like the Simpsons), 3 will work fine.
If a character's more realistic, then 3 and a thumb looks creepy.
