Box Office Report: ‘Furious 7’ Three-peats, Jumps $1B Globally

Universal’s ‘Furious 7’ wins its third consecutive weekend at the North American box office this with $29.1 million; jumps the $1 billion mark globally with $1.153 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

Universal’s Furious 7 won its third consecutive weekend at the North American box office this past weekend with $29.1 million, pushing the domestic total of the final film featuring the late Paul Walker to $294.4 million. Globally, the movie jumped the $1 billion mark, finishing Sunday with $1.153 billion in worldwide ticket sales, including $250.5 million in China.

Coming in at number two, Sony’s family friendly Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 debuted with $24 million from 3,633 theaters. Starring Kevin James and co-starring Raini Rodriguez, Neal McDonough and Shirley Knight, the $30 million sequel is directed by Andy Fickman and co-produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison.

In third place, Universal and Blumhouse Production’s R-rated microbudget horror movie Unfriended opened to $16 million from 2,739 locations. Made for $1 million, Unfriended was directed by Levan Gabriadze from a script written by Nelson Greaves, and excluding Ouija -- which is based on existing intellectual property -- is the biggest debut for an original horror movie since The Conjuring in July 2013.

DreamWorks Animation’s Home came in fourth place, earning and additional $10.3 million for distributor Fox for a domestic tally of $142.6 million. Now in its fourth week at the box office, the CG animated feature came in second place internationally (behind Furious 7), adding $10.3 million for a new international total of $127.3 million and worldwide tally of $269.9 million. With China and South Korea on the way, the movie still has a good chance of reaching $200 million overseas.

Fox 2000’s The Longest Ride rounded out the Top Five with $6.85 million, pushing the film’s domestic take to $23.5 million.

Warner Bros.' R-rated comedy Get Hard came in sixth place, taking in $4.8 million for a domestic total of $78.3 million. Internationally, the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy has made $13.4 million for a global total of $91.7 million.

Disney's critically acclaimed Disneynature documentary Monkey Kingdom placed at number seven for its debut, taking in $4.7 million from 2,012 theaters.

Woman in Gold expanded to 2,011 locations, adding $4.6 million over its third weekend out for a domestic total of $15.9 million and an eighth place finish. Starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds, the drama is a solid hit for The Weinstein Company.

Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent came in ninth place, taking in $4.2 million over its fifth weekend at the box office for a domestic total of $120.6 million. Overseas, Insurgent has made a total of $135.3 million for a total of $255.9 million worldwide.

Rounding out the list at number 10 is Disney’s Cinderella, which brought in $3.8 million for a domestic total of $186.3 million. Overseas, the live-action remake has made $271.4 million for a total of $457.7 million globally.

Elsewhere, the weekend's biggest casualty was Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s Child 44. Coming in at number 17, the Stalin-era thriller starring Tom Hardy and Noomi Repace  opened to a dismal $600,000 from 510 theaters. Adapted from the best-selling book by Tom Rob Smith, the $50 million movie was produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House).
