Marvel Entertainment has found their newest Superhero with the signing of Chris Evans to play Captain America in 3 upcoming films.

As reported in Variety, Evans accepted late last week, beating out a host of actors for the coveted roles.  The actor will be called upon to star in The First Avenger: Captain America, which is set to hit theatres on July 22, 2011.  He is also scheduled to appear in The Avengers, uniting the Captain with Iron Man Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Edward Norton’s the Incredible Hulk.  That all-star film is currently set for a May 4, 2012 release.  Cameo appearances are likely in other Marvel pictures as part of the studio’s plan to tie together characters from their recent and planned slate of films.

Evans and Marvel are no strangers, as the actor has already played the role of Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in both Fantastic Four movies for Fox.

The Wolfman’s Joe Johnston is set to helm First Avenger from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Hugo Weaving has been cast as the villain Red Skull.
