Iman Vellani to Co-Pen a ‘Ms. Marvel’ Comic

The ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘The Marvels’ star joins writer Sabir Pirzada on ‘Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant,’ a new comic resurrecting the recently deceased Kamala Khan in her newly defined status as a mutant.

From silver screen to page! Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels, is set to co-pen the new Marvel comic Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant with Sabir Pirzada (writer on Ms. Marvel TV series). Although Kamala valiantly passed away in Amazing Spider-Man #26, it seems the character will not be gone for long.

"This was way scarier than joining the MCU for me," Vellani told EW. "Those projects feel like they live in their own dimension, so I guess I can separate myself easier. But you can hold a comic book! I've never written anything before in my entire life, but I have read many comics, so I just wrote what I would want to read. I was given a very professional tool to write what is essentially my own fan fiction."

In the upcoming comic, Kamala is officially represented as a mutant, which was revealed on the Ms. Marvel series finale. If we know anything about mutants, we know they tend to come back to life a lot. However, her newfound mutant-hood does not cancel her cannon depiction as an Inhuman.

"I want to make it very, very clear that we are not reconning her Inhuman origin. That's a part of Kamala's identity that Marvel editorial and myself would very much like to keep and protect," Vellani says. "Our book will absolutely reflect all those core themes of identity that the Ms. Marvel comics have consistently explored — only now there's a whole new label that Kamala has to learn to accept. It's going to be pretty crazy."

Vellani added, "Hopefully those readers who are kind of getting into the comics after the Disney+ show are going to have something fun to look forward to on shelves."

Kamala’s look will also be getting a revamp. Her signature suit lightning bolt, which dates back to Carol Danvers, has been updated with X-Men logos to rep her new allegiance.

At least this is one Marvel project that won’t be affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike!
