The actress, who plays Nami in the all-new pirate adventure series, shares experiences growing up as an anime and manga fan and other geeky, nerdy stuff; the series sets sail on August 31.
It’s getting closer… the live-action One Piece series premieres globally on August 31 - and Netflix continues to gen up anticipation (or are they just teasing us mercilessly?) with the release of Emily Rudd from One Piece Tells How She Grew Up Geeked. The video, captured prior to the start of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, features Rudd, who stars as Nami, sharing personal stories and experiences of growing up as a fan of anime, manga, and other geek culture elements. She talks a bit about what the greatest, unattainable nerdy treasures were when she was a kid, and connecting with her audience on a personal level.
Based on Japan’s highest-selling manga series by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a legendary high-seas tale unlike any other. Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom for as long as he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates! But to find the ultimate prize, Luffy must assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.
Starring Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji, the live-action pirate adventure is created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda are writers, executive producers, and showrunners. Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements also executive produce.
Additional cast includes Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, Chioma Umeala, and Michael Dorman, with more to be announced.
Victor Scalise serves as production VFX supervisor; Scott Ramsey serves as VFX producer. VFX are being handled by Barnstorm VFX, CoSA VFX, Eyeline Studios, Framestore, Goodbye Kansas Studios, Incessant Rain, Ingenuity Studios, NetFX, Refuge, Rising Sun Pictures, and Scanline VFX.
