The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced their nominations for the coveted Oscar award. Receiving nominations for best animated short were Michael Dudok de Wit's lyrically elegant FATHER & DAUGHTER, Steffen and Annette Schaffler's moody puppet film THE PERIWIG-MAKER and Don Hertzfeldt's humorously chaotic short REJECTED. GLADIATOR, HOLLOW MAN and THE PERFECT STORM all received nods for best visual effects. Surprisingly absent from the F/X nomination list was Disney's $150 million-plus budgeted DINOSAUR. DreamWorks' GLADIATOR was the big winner taking home 12 nominations including best picture. The buzz film of 2000, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, came close behind, picking up 10 nominations, including best picture and best foreign language picture. Strictly animated fare was very absent from this year's list, with the only nod going to THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE for Sting and David Hartey's song "My Funny Friend and Me." The 73rd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 25, 2001 at 9 pm (EST).
