Alternately known as ‘Metegol’ and ‘Futbol,’ CG animated family feature became the third-highest grossing film of the year when it was released in its home country of Argentina in 2013.
The Weinstein Co. has released the first official U.S. trailer for Juan Jose Campanella’s animated feature Underdogs.
From the director of the Academy Award-winning The Secret in Their Eyes, Underdogs (alternately known as Metegol and Futbol) became the third-highest grossing film of the year when it was released in its home country in 2013. Campanella also co-wrote the film, which is inspired by the short story “Memorias de un wing derecho” (“Memoirs of a Right Wing”) by Argentine writer Roberto Fontanarrosa. Produced for $21 million by Plural-Jempsa, Catmandu and 100 Bares, Underdogs is also notable for being the most expensive movie, animated or otherwise, ever produced in Argentina.

Here’s the official synopsis:
From Academy Award winning director Juan Jose Campanella comes Underdogs, an animated comedy with a little bit of magic and a whole lot of heart. Jake (Matthew Morrison) is a shy, but talented, foosball player. His passion for the game is rivaled only by his love for free-spirited Laura (Ariana Grande). With her encouragement, he beats the town bully, Ace (Nicholas Hoult), in a foosball game. But everything changes when Ace becomes the world’s best soccer player and returns years later to turn their village into a new sports stadium. He starts to destroy everything and kidnaps Laura in the process. Just when it looks like all hope is lost, the toy figures from Jake’s foosball table come to life. He and the players embark on a wild adventure to save Laura and reclaim their village. With the help of his team, his town, and a little bit of magic, Jake will try to save the day.
Also featuring the voices of Bella Thorne (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day), Katie Holmes (The Giver) and John Leguizamo (Chef), Underdogs releases into theaters on April 10.
