Ireland’s 'The Duel' Debuts at Trinity

A new animated short film set in the “Unseen University” of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld produced by the Ireland’s Animation Hub -- the Irish School of Animation at Ballyfermot College of Further Education, Trinity College Dublin and Giant Animation Studios -- launches at a special world premiere screening at the Science Gallery in Trinity College.

Hudson Valley College Tour Featuring Bill Plympton

Bill Plympton will be presenting a selection of some of his favorite work and following each screeening with a Q&A. Screenings are free of charge and open to the public.

In addition to his many shorts, Plympton has made seven feature films, (five of them animated) including THE TUNE, MONDO PLYMPTON, I MARRIED A STRANGE PERSON, MUTANT ALIENS and HAIR HIGH. Kalamazoo Cartoon-Creating Competitors Set

Ten teams from animation programs spanning North America will engage in a "24/4" cartoon-creating competition prior to the start of the fifth Kalamazoo Animation Festival International (KAFI) scheduled for May 14-17 in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Earning spots in the competition for the 2009 "Cartoon Challenge" are four- and five-person teams from:

-- San Jose State University in California.-- College for Creative Studies in Detroit.-- Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.-- South Dakota State University.

Ringling College Adds Business BA

Ringling College of Art and Design has launched a new BA program -- Business of Art & Design.

The new BA course, The Business of Art & Design, aims to help graduates understand business, and how better to run businesses if they strike out on their own. The program contains echoes of Harvard Business School. To the knowledge of the college, there is no comparable course among other art and design schools.

Ringling's major courses grew from six to 14 in the past three years and the school boasts an 85 percent graduation rate.

Emerging animators from across Canada have been selected as finalists for the 2008 TELETOON Animation Scholarship. With shorts spanning from the biblical past to a hyper-industrial future, the short-listed films are now on www.teletoon.com. Cartoon fans are invited to watch and vote to decide which short in each category will win the Voter's Choice Award and receive a cash award of $500. Voting is open until September 15.

Boston College QB Is Cover Athlete For PS3 NCAA FOOTBALL 09

Former Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan will be the cover athlete for NCAA FOOTBALL 09 on the PlayStation 3. This year, the packaging for each of the NCAA FOOTBALL 09 console platforms will feature an exclusive cover athlete.

Electronic Arts' NCAA FOOTBALL 09, scheduled for release in North America on July 15, will feature wide-open gameplay, college atmosphere and online enhancements. This year's iteration of NCAA Football brings to life the fun and excitement of game day Saturdays.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, will speak at the Ringling College of Art and Design's 2008 Commencement Ceremony on May 2, 2008 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota, Florida.

At this event, Ringling College will present Katzenberg with its first-ever Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree.

Mt. San Jacinto College Animates High School Students

This fall, Mt. San Jacinto College plans to hold animation and video classes for high school students were they could earn college credits, reports THE PRESS-ENTERPRISE. In May, the community college was awarded a Strengthening Career Technical Education Programs grant worth $250,000. The grant will pay for training high school teachers, grow industry partnerships and launch an animation and video festival.

Visual Effects Artist Eric Algren Dies at 32

Eric Algren passed away unexpectedly on May 25, 2007, at the age of 32, reports the BIG CARTOON DATABASE.

His most recent work was as a Flame artist on FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. He also served as a digital compositor on the upcoming sci-fi thriller THE INVASION, which is set for release in the U.S. on Aug. 17.

He worked for such companies as Hydraulx, Digital Domain and Creo for projects including 300, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, AEON FLUX, LITTLE MAN, FAILURE TO LAUNCH and TITANIC. In 2000, he was an animation assistant on Disney's DINOSAUR.

Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants will be amongst the presenters of the 2006 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Aug. 19, 2006, at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, which is not part of the Emmy awards network broadcast on Aug. 27 on NBC-TV. The ceremony will air as an exclusive two-hour special on E! Entertainment TV on Aug. 26 at 8:00 pm.
