Using Flash for Broadcast Quality Animation, Is it possible?

Well, I just came back from a one week trip to Korea. Korean Animation industry is very mature and they asked our (Pakistan) Government for possible outsourcing options. I went there as part of a 6 people delegation team and was the only one representing a 2D Animation Studio. It went really well and they were impressed with the quality of our work. Now I am pursuing some long-term contracts but my only concern is that, their regular work is done in Toon Boom and US Animation and my team works in Flash.

So is it possible to develop broadcast quality animation in Flash? Or is it possible to convert our existing content (Thousands of Original funny cartoon animated eCards) to broadcast quality animations?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Yeah Phacker, it is cool as long as you are not biased toward one country or religion.

SpaceMonkey, every area has its own advantages and disadvantages. China will definitely have language problems. You know quality animation is all about the expressions and if the animator does not understand the situation fully he can not draw the required expression. So language is going to be a major problem as for as animation industry is concerned.

Pakistan has been a British colony for more than 100 years. English is still our official language and we can fully understand it and communicate in it every day. So this is one distinct advantage we have over China. And secondly, IT income is not Taxable here so wage rates are still very very competitive.

Coming back to the topic.

Is there anyone who used Toon Titan to help him producing broadcast quality animation? (Phacker you also post there. I would like to know your comments)

Is there any one having experience with flash2video software?

Flash2 Video s/w ? why , you can do that using flash itsself. with the right resolution and frame rate , export for broadcast quality ( like said before flickerlab has a lot of info) and then use adobe aftereffects or premier ( the simpler ones) or avid or final cut ( more high end ) to do the compositing and , tada ! :)
yes there are a lot of f2v so.w but why invest in that when you can do most of yr work in flash .

I wonder how one sells the goods without knowing their options and capabilities in advance.

phacker,

Thanks for your reply.

We have been around from quite some time and have produced over 5000 original cartoon animations for Web. We never have done any project for broadcasting purpose. The Korea trip was just to get an idea about whats happening around. We have best talent available here just need them to be trained for the broadcast as well. I mean we are already making animations with frame by frame art sequences and I want to know the exact process to develop broadcast quality from Flash or we will have to switch to Toon Boom.

You can check this link to get an idea of the quality we are doing for web.

Fun Punch , yes it is possible to make use flash for broadcast , look at series like warner brothers : mucha lucha or Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends ( i think its by disney ) many big studios around the world are using flash for broadcast . and thanks to macromedias' 'ffort they are coming up with a new version for flash , for animation , which is to be tweaked for broadcast, thought the present flash mx / 2004 also supports broadcast . you could probably have a look at FLICKER LAB for the best information about what broadcast is all about .

I have heard that the asian sub-continents market has been flooded with a lot of flash projects , so i am sure you would be able to do a good job, thought a lot of the present difficulties usin flash are discussed here at

do yr research ! all the best !

Yes FunPunch, there are several Flash to broadcast cartoons being produced. There is "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" (Cartoon Network) "Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi" (Renegade w/Cartoon Network) "Atomic Betty" (Atomic Cartoons), although I heard it uses Toon Boom, "Mucha Lucha" (Warnar Bros.) and "The Buzz About Maggie" starting production (Disney).

Being that Flash is a vector based program, it can be shown at any size with out loosing resolution, internet, broadcast TV, or film. Flickerlab is a good site with all the details. But essentially, you export out your Flash files as uncompressed video files, like avi's or and image sequence. Compile it all together in a program like Avid or Premiere, and put it onto a broadcast compatable medium, like Betacam.

swankaman

Thanks Swankaman, SpaceMonkey and Animated Ape for the valuable input and appreciation on the showreel.

That Flicker Lab resource is also great. Thanks again. It seems to solve the problems. Anybody has any experience with Flash2Video and ToonTitan software? Are they worth spending your time?

Phacker, I have updated my profile. Basically were the only company who took the imitative to explore the charismatic world of 2D cartoon animation when other companies in Pakistan were focusing on 3D animation. Working in this field was nothing more than a challenge and along with hard work and dedication; our team has managed to produce over 5000 animations in a short period of 4 years for more than 100 North American and European Clients. We have 15,000 Sq feet air-conditioned premises with 24 hours power back support. We have broadband connectivity and US/Canada VOIP Telephone line. You can find more details on this link.

Sounds like you are treating your employees well. And thanks for posting your location. I like to know where people are located it just kind lends another aspect to this computer thing. Sometimes I am up all night and it's kind of cool to know I talking with someone clear acrossed the world.
