Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington's R-rated action pic 2 Guns, directed by Iceland’s Baltasar Kormakur, won the North American box office race with a $27.4 million debut.
Twentieth Century Fox’s Wolverine came in second place with $21.7 million over its sophomore weekend for a domestic total of $95 million. The tentpole feature, which posted the strongest opening ever for an X-Men title, cost $120 million to produce.
Sony’s live action-animation hybrid feature The Smurfs 2 took in $18.2 million for the weekend for a five-day debut of $27.3 million and a third place finish. Overseas the CGI/live-action feature brought in $52.5 million for a worldwide total of $80.3 million.
In fourth place, New Line's low-budget horror film The Conjuring $13.7 million over its third weekend at the box office, pushing the film’s North American total to $108.6 million.
Universal and Illumination Entertainment's animated feature, Despicable Me 2, now in its fourth weekend, took in $10.4 million at the North American box office for a domestic total of $$326.7 million. Overseas, the animated tentpole has now earned $387 million for a worldwide total of $713.7 million.
Adam Sandler ensemble comedy Grown Ups 2 came in sixth place, taking in $8.1 million for a domestic total of $116.4 million.
DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo took in $6.4 million over the weekend for a total of $69.5 million and a seventh place finish. Distributed by DWA partner Fox Animation, Turbo, directed by David Soren, cost $135 million to produce.
Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment’s action feature Red 2, starring Bruce Willis, came in at number eight, bringing in $5.7 million over its third weekend at the box office for a domestic total of $45.2 million.
In ninth place, Fox's Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy The Heat brought in $4.7 million over the film’s fifth weekend at the box office for a domestic total of $149.6 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Warner Bros. and Legendary Picture's big-budget feature Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, brought in $4.6 million for a total of $93.1 million. Overseas the film beat out Sony’s Smurfs 2 for the number one spot at the international box office, grossing $53 million for an international total of $200.4 million and almost $295 million worldwide.
