Box Office Report: Audiences Check into 'Hotel Transylvania'

Sony's “Hotel Transylvania” smashes records with $43 million opening.

In a sizable win for Sony, 3D animated feature Hotel Transylvania debuted to $43 million, the best performance to date for the studio's animation unit. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, Hotel Transylvania rolled out in 13 foreign markets, grossing $8.1 million for a worldwide total of $51.1 million.

Looper, released by Sony's TriStar label in tandem with FilmDistrict and Endgame Entertainment, took the number two spot with a $21.2 million debut. A Chinese co-production, Looper is also is doing impressive opening business in China, where the film grossed between $23 -$25 million for the weekend.

Open Road Films’ End of Watch came in third place this weekend, bringing in $8 million on its sophomore weekend out for a total of $26.2 million.

In fourth place, Clint Eastwood'sbaseball drama, Trouble with the Curve, made $7.5 million for a total of $23.7 million.

Relativity Media’s horror film House at the End of the Street came in fifth place, earning $7.2 million for a total of $22.2 million.

Universal musical comedy Pitch Perfect opened in limited release this weekend, bringing in $5.2 million and placing at number six. The film is expected to well as it expands into theaters.

At number seven, the 3D release of Pixar’s Finding Nemo brought Disney $4.1 million for a total of $36.5 million.

Sony’s Resident Evil: Retribution took eighth place with $3 million for a domestic total of $38.7 million.

In ninth place, Paul Thomas Anderson'sThe Master brought in $2.7 million for a total of $9.6million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, Walden Media wide release Won't Back Down, distributed by 20th Century Fox, opened to $2.7 million.
