The third new film of the weekend was Universal and Working Title Films' family-friendly whale feature Big Miracle, starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. The title opened at number four with $8.5 million.
Beating Big Miracle for the number three spot was Open Road Film's The Grey, which grossed a sturdy $9.5 million in its second weekend for a total of $34.7 million.
Underworld Awakening rounded out the top five with an estimated $5.6 million, bringing a total of $54.4 million.
In its second weekend, the Katherine Heigl action comedyOne For the Money earned an estimated $5.25 million, for a total of$ 19.7 million.
In seventh place, Red Tails fell 52 percent to $5 million and has so far made $41.3 million.
Among contenders for the Academy Award Best Picture race, Fox Searchlight's The Descendants beat out Warner Bros.' Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, grossing $4.6 million for a total of $65.2 million and coming in at number eight.
In ninth place, Summit Entertainment’s Man on a Ledge brought in $4.6 million for a total of $65.2 million. Extremely Loud, placing at number 10, grossed $3.9 million for a total of $26.8 million.
Awards frontrunner The Artist, distributed by the Weinstein Company, came in twelfth as the silent, black-and-white film grossed $2.6 million for a total of $20.6 million.
The Weinstein Company opened Madonna's British royal romance W.E. in four locations in New York and Los Angeles, timed to her Super Bowl half-time show. The film grossed $45,000.
