Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman made a splash at the box office this weekend, taking first place at theaters and scoring the second-highest debut of summer so far with $56.3 million.
Sony’s Men in Black III was bumped to the number two spot on the domestic box office charts, earning $29.3 million for a total of $112.3 million. Overseas, however, MIB3 won the weekend, bringing in $79.1 million for a worldwide total of $387.7 million.
MIB3 wasn't the only new Hollywood feature making headlines. Opening in 15 markets overseas a week ahead of its June 8 domestic debut, Ridley Scott's 3D sci-fi spectacle Prometheus grossed a stellar $35 million for 20th Century Fox.
Marvel's The Avengers held on to the number three spot in its fifth weekend out at the domestic box office, earning $20.3 million for a total of $552.7 million.
In fourth place, Universal’s Battleship brought in $4.8 million for a total of $55.1 million.
Paramount’s The Dictator came in fifth place this weekend, bringing in $4.7 million for a total of $50.8 million.
Fox Searchlight's specialty box office feature The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel held on to number six on the charts, grossed $4.6 million domestically for a total of $25.5 million.
At number seven, Lionsgate’s ensemble comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting brought in $4.4 million on its third weekend out for a total of $30.7 million.
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's vampire soap opera revival Dark Shadows brought in $3.9 million in its fourth weekend out for a total of $70.8 million, placing the film in eighth place on the box office charts.
In ninth place, Warner Bros’ Chernobyl Diaries brought in $3 million on its second weekend out for a total of $14.4 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, Arc Entertainment's historic epic For Greater Glory, starring Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria, had its debut this weekend, bringing in $1.8 million.
In other specialty box office news, Dimension Films' Piranha 3DD had its debut in theaters and on premium VOD this weekend as well, earning $179,000 from 86 theaters for a location average of $7,004, and early numbers suggest the feature is doing well on VOD.
In its second weekend out, Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom grossed $848,681 from 16 theaters for a total of $1.7 million, and French comedy The Intouchables grossed $350,186 in its second outing for a total of $516,798.
