20th Century Fox has hired Jennifer Connelly and is in final talks with Kathy Bates to join the cast of the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, report the trades. Keanu Reeves is also starring.
THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director Scott Derrickson is helming the film from a script by Ryne Douglas Pearson, which was tweaked by David Scarpa.
The story follows an alien named Klaatu (Reeves) who arrives on Earth with a warning that humans need to stop their warring ways or his people will be forced to destroy the planet to protect the universe. Connelly will play the mother of the young boy that Klaatu befriends.
Erwin Stoff and Derrickson's partner Paul Boardman are producing.
Production is set to start in December in Vancouver.
