Press Release from Entity FX
Santa Monica, CA – Entity FX announced today work on a number of new and returning primetime television programs for the Fall 2010 season. Entity FX has created all visual effects for The Vampire Diaries since the show's record-setting debut on the CW network last year, and has continued in that role, supporting the People's Choice Award-winning series as it begins Season 2 on Thursday, September 9.
Entity FX is also the sole visual effects facility for Smallville, which returns for a tenth season on the CW starting Friday, September 24. Entity FX has created all the show's visual effects – including its signature superhero power effects — since 2001.
Hellcats, among the CW's promising newcomers this year, is premiering tonight, also exclusively featuring visual effects from Entity FX.
The Vampire Diaries, from the creator of Dawson’s Creek, follows the struggles of a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers. It is based on the books by L.J. Smith. Many of the characters in the show exhibit supernatural abilities — flight, super-strength, super-fast motion, the ability to transform into animals — while others display special faculties such as levitation and fire-starting.
An important recurring visual effect involves pulsing veins around the eyes, which reveal characters' true vampiric nature when they get angry, hungry or aroused. These "digital appliances" are 3D tracked onto the actors' faces and are individually tailored to each character's performance. Additional visual effects range from split screen composites, speed ramps and wire/rig removals to atmospheric effects and matte paintings. Entity FX created the show's new opening title treatment as well.
Clark Kent comes face to face with his long-awaited destiny in Smallville Season 10. The hit show, which chronicles the path of the young Superman with a comic book appeal, is set to feature a number of large visual effects episodes in its final year.
Hellcats, executive produced by Kevin Murphy, Tom Welling and Allan Arkush, is set within the high-drama world of collegiate cheerleading. Visual effects highlights include digital crowd creation and blue screen compositing.
Hellcats airs Wednesdays at 9/8 C, The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8/7 C; and Smallville airs Fridays 8/7 C. All three programs appear on the CW.
Other recent television work by the Entity FX team includes multiple episodes of AMC's critically acclaimed original drama Breaking Bad and visual effects shots and sequences for The Good Guys, airing Fridays at 9/8 C on FOX. Upcoming motion picture projects include visual effects for Conviction, starring Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank and releasing October 15, and stereoscopic 3D visual effects for Yogi Bear, set to premiere December 17.
