‘Frozen 2’ Passes ‘Frozen’ to Become Highest-Grossing Animated Feature of All Time

Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s hit sequel passes $1.32 billion at the worldwide box office; Disney/Pixar now holds top three spots on list of most successful animated feature films in history.

Disney’s Frozen 2, the studio’s hit sequel to their previous box office champ, Frozen, bested its predecessor this past weekend as it became the all-time animated feature film box office champ; it’s $1.32 billion cume makes the Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s musical the most successful animated feature film in history, a spot previously held by their original 2013 film. Disney/Pixar, with Frozen 2, Frozen and Incredibles 2, now holds the top three spots on the list of most successful animated feature films in history.

Though arguably the closest thing you could have to a “sure hit” when it was released last November, Frozen 2 nevertheless has shown incredible stamina and success in theatres. It became Disney’s sixth 2019 release to generate $1 billion worldwide when it hit that mark mid-December; it’s box office haul now stands at $449 million domestic and $875.3 million international. It also boasts the best international animated film opening ever with $228.2 million.

In Frozen 2, Queen Elsa travels far beyond the gates of Arendelle on a dangerous and difficult journey to a mysterious enchanted forest. She learns of its historical curse as she seeks the source of a mystical voice that calls out to her while also putting her kingdom in jeopardy.  Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad return as the voices of Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf, while Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) joins the cast as Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa’s mother, and Sterling K. Brown (This Is UsBlack Panther) portrays Lieutenant Destin Mattias.
