The duo will executive produce the series, based on famed sci-fi author Roger Zelazny’s 1970s novel which features a time traveling highway and… dragons.
Way to procrastinate on A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin! The prolific Game of Thrones writer and producer has teamed with Kalinda Vazquez (Star Trek: Discovery) to adapt Roger Zelazny’s sci-fi novel Roadmarks for HBO Max. Martin will executive produce alongside Vazquez, who will also write and showrun.
The 1970s novel features a time traveling highway, which can link timelines and locations together. It also features, wait for it… dragons! Martin just can’t help himself. In an interview with Deadline, the prolific fantasy novelist explains, “My career in television started in 1985 when I adapted Roger Zelazny’s ‘Last Defender of Camelot’ for The Twilight Zone. Roger was a friend, a mentor, and one of the greatest science fiction writers who ever lived. It was an honor to be able to bring his work to television. That is why I am so thrilled to be a part of adapting Roger’s novel ‘Roadmarks’ for HBO. We have a great book, a great screenwriter in Kalinda Vasquez, and the makings of a wonderful, original show. I look forward to a long and thrilling journey.”
What a touching tribute to an old, departed friend. We wonder, however, how fans will react to this diversion from his “GOT” novels, which are already long overdue.
