As a result of the popularity of Kevin Tancharoen's spec short film and subsequent web series, New Line has decided to reboot MORTAL KOMBAT for the big screen, reports Variety. Tancharoen will direct and write the script alongside Oren Uziel, who worked together on the MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH webisodes. Dave Neustadter and Walter Hamada are shepherding for New Line.
New Line's parent company Warner Bros. purchased the rights to MORTAL KOMBAT when Midway Games went out of business in 2009. The original game, which was marked by its edge-pushing violence, launched in 1992. In 2009, Threshold Ent. sued Warner Bros. alleging they still held the rights to feature versions of the game and that Warner's plans to make a third film breached its licensing agreement.
