Doug Liman (THE BOURNE IDENTITY) has signed on to direct an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s PATHS OF GLORY, which follows George Mallory's three attempts to become the first man to scale Mt. Everest, reports Deadline.com. Sheldon Turner (UP IN THE AIR) has adapted the book for the screen. Jennifer Klein will produce the Sony Pictures production.
Mallory was in a race with Australian George Finch to reach the top first. On his first two attempts Mallory refused to use oxygen, but changed his mind for his third attempt. He and his partner Sandy Irvine were last seen entering the clouds at the summit in 1924. Debate still rages on whether he made it or not. In 1999, his remains were found and the picture of his wife that he promised to put at the top was not among his possessions.
