The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue to wreak havoc on Hollywood, as the list of film delays now includes the upcoming animated Spidey flick as well as ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife.’
So much for the release calendar. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have effectively shut down Hollywood, with Variety recently reporting multiple Sony theatrical delays. While many affected films are still in production, even those that have wrapped filming lack stars to promote, which severely impacts profitability.
Included in the list of delayed films are Kraven the Hunter, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and Ghostbusters Afterlife. Kraven will now release on August 30, 2024, allowing lead star Aaron Taylor-Johnson to take part in any future press tour (assuming the strike is over by then), while Afterlife has been pushed to March 29, 2024. Unfortunately, Beyond the Spider-Verse has been taken off the release calendar altogether as the voice cast has been unable to complete dialogue recording. An updated release date is expected soon.
On the bright side, the Dakota Johnson-led Madame Web will now release two days earlier on February 14, 2024, and Venom 3 has received a release date of July 12, 2024. The upcoming Gran Turismo flick starring David Harbour and Orlando Bloom will still release August 11.
Expect similar delays in the coming days as more studios adjust their schedules around the strikes. 2023 is just not the year the film industry had hoped for.
