Signs Stays Strong In A Barren Field

With only one new release this weekend, SIGNS, with visual effects by ILM, was able to maintain its hold on the number one spot. The film regained the top spot last week after spending two weeks in second place, and with $16.5M for the U.S. Labor Day weekend and $195M gross to date, the crop circle caper is on its way to the $200M mark. Extreme sports flick XXX, with visual effects by Digital Domain, dropped a spot to third but is still performing well, with $13.1M for a total of $123.9M. SPY KIDS 2, with visual effects by ComputerCafe and others, slipped a notch to fourth place, but added $8.3M to its total and has grossed $70.1M after one month in theaters. SIMONE, the "virtual reality" comedy about a computer-generated actress, fell well out of the top ten in its second week, after a lackluster ninth place debut. The film earned $2.8M over the four-day weekend, which was good enough for thirteenth place and a total cume of $8M. The re-release of LILO & STITCH didn't do much for the film. The alien and his gal pal traveled into about 1,100 additional theaters to gross $1.7M bringing its total to date to $142.1M. And it's possible that Warner Bros. THE ADVENTURES OF PLUTO NASH, with visual effects by Buzz Image Group, may go down in history as one of the biggest money losers ever. The film, which cost a reported $90M, has grossed just $4.2M and sits in 40th place after three weeks in theaters. Box office information obtained from yahoo.com and boxofficemojo.com.
