The adaptation, which recently lost ‘Talk to Me’ filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, will now hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
Sony Pictures has announced that its long-gestating Street Fighter film adaptation will now release in theaters March 20, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, from Legendary Entertainment, is co-produced and developed with Capcom.
The film lost its helmers, Danny and Michael Philippou, earlier this month due to scheduling conflicts. The directing duo is known for their apt use of tension and gore, most notable in their breakout Sundance horror flick Talk to Me. No word yet on any stylistic or plot changes following their departure.
Since its launch in 1987, Street Fighter has become one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time, selling over 49 million units worldwide. The series of games follows many iconic characters, including Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Guile and more, each with their own memorable moves, looks, and catchphrases.
Luckily for the upcoming live-action film, Legendary has a successful track record with adaptations, including Dune and Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Hopefully, Capcom can escape the curse of its previous Street Fighter films - 1994’s Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Kristin Kreuk - both critical and box office bombs.
No word yet on any VFX studios in the mix.
