On the heels of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’s successful release last week, Warner Bros. announces the next sequel in the planned superhero trilogy is a go from the dynamic Jenkins / Gadot duo, with Kristen Wiig possibly reprising her role as Cheetah.
Love it or hate it, Wonder Woman will be back for a third and possibly fourth installment, with director Patty Jenkins and star/producer Gal Gadot returning. Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich told Variety, “As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.”
The Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, received mixed reviews when it premiered both in theaters and HBO Max last week on Christmas day, December 25, garnering a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film earned $16.7 million in its opening weekend, the best domestic turnout in the current COVID-19 theatrical era.
While 1984 introduced Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Max Lord, not much is yet known of the third film plot. Jenkins recently took to Twitter to lightly tease a possible Cheetah return:
Thank you for the question!
We'll just have to see... https://t.co/T9PYjyQ0Lh— Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) December 27, 2020
Although we must wait for more Wonder Woman 3 details, the dynamic Jenkins / Gadot duo have already reunited for Cleopatra, currently set for a 2022 release.
