Taekwon V Sets Korean Animated Film Record

TAEKWON V, a classic Korean film about a tae kwon do trained robot has set a new record for domestic animated movies, reports ARIRANG NEWS. TAEKWON V attracted more than 500,000 moviegoers in its first 13 days of release breaking the previous record set by BLUE SEAGULL in 1994.

TAEKWON V, originally released in 1976, has been digitally restored. Industry experts believe the film's popularity will continue as the movie has attracted an average of 200,000 viewers a week.

The Invincible Iron Man Comes to DVD

Marvel, MLG Prods. 3 and Lionsgate bring a new animated feature, THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, to DVD (Lionsgate Home Ent., $19.98) on Jan. 23, 2007. Directed by Frank Paur (X-MEN EVOLUTION, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES), they've gone back to the origin of Iron Man. Marvel To Produce Teen Avengers Animated Feature

In an interview with IGN.com, Craig Kyle, vp of creative development for animation at Marvel Studios, said that the company is working on an animated direct-to-video with a working title of TEEN AVENGERS. Kyle said that unlike the studios' previous animated productions, the TEEN AVENGERS film would be geared to a younger audience -- more in the vein of a Saturday morning cartoon.

PGA Announces Animated Feature Noms

The Producer's Guild of America has issued nominations for Producer of the Year Award Animated Film. In the running is Darla K. Anderson for Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation's CARS. For DreamWorks Animation's FLUSHED AWAY, the nominees are Cecil Kramer and Peter Lord. Doug Mitchell, George Miller and Bill Miller are up for Warner Bros.' HAPPY FEET. A nom for 20th Century Fox Animation's ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN goes to Lori Forte. Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke share noms for Sony's MONSTER HOUSE.

Ivor the Engine Actor Dies

Actor Anthony Jackson, who provided many voices for Britain's IVOR THE ENGINE animated series, died Nov. 26, 2006, in London of cancer, according to the Big Cartoon Database. He was 62.

Born in Birmingham on Feb. 18, 1944, Jackson voiced Dai Station, Evans the Song and Mr. Dinwiddy on IVOR THE ENGINE, which debuted with six episodes in 1958. He reprised the same roles when the series was remade in color in 1975.

Golden Globes Like Cars, Happy Feet & Monster House

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. announced its nominees this morning (Dec. 14, 2006), adding for the first time a Best Animated Film category. The three animated nominees were CARS, HAPPY FEET and MONSTER HOUSE.

Other animated related nominations came in the Best Original Song -- Motion Picture category for "The Song Of The Heart," music and lyrics by Prince Rogers Nelson, from HAPPY FEET.

11 Animated Shorts Selected for Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival has announced its lineup, which includes 11 animated shorts. The event runs from Jan. 18-28, 2007, in Park City, Utah.

George Eldred (Aspen Shortsfest), Shane Smith (World Wide Short Film Fest), Kimberly Yutani (Outfest) and Todd Luoto (Silver Lake Film Festival) were on the selection committee for the festival shorts.

"Animated Dreams" consists of:* International competition programme of short animated films;* Informative special programmes: retrospectives of a filmmaker, genre or studio, and focus on a country.

Eligible for competition are short (-15 min) animated films in 35mm and video formats that have premiered after 1 January, 2005. Screening copies must carry English subtitles or have English dialogue (if any). There are no restrictions to prior festival exposure of entered films.

Hot Bollywood Director Moves into Animation

Bollywood's hot young director Karan Johar has announced that he will make an animated feature, reports APUNKACHOICE.

Karan plans to make the animated feature like most popular Bollywood films, including songs and high drama. Suresh Nair will pen the script with production set to start early next year.

"Now, all I want is a good technical team," said Karan.

Officials from NEST Family Learning, a leading producer and distributor of family educational products, announced its partnership with Trinity Broadcasting Network. As part of the deal, 13 episodes from NEST's animated Bible series will begin airing on Saturday, Nov. 18, on Trinity Broadcasting Network. Geared toward children 3-12, the series uses animation to teach biblical principles and essential Christian values.

High School Musical's Zac Efron Guest Stars on The Replacements

Zac Efron (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL) guest stars on Disney Channel's new hit animated series, THE REPLACEMENTS, on Nov. 18, 2006, at 8:00 pm. Since its premiere, THE REPLACEMENTS has been the No. 1 animated series on Disney Channel for kids 6-11.

In order to get Johnny Hitswell's attention, Riley replaces the old pool lifeguard with Davey Hunkerhoff (voiced by Efron), a hunky 14-year-old lifeguard she flirts with to make Johnny jealous. Her plan backfires when Davey actually likes her back, and, discovering her plan, his feelings are so hurt he closes the pool.

Animated Feature Oscar Race Features 16

Now that 16 animated features were submitted for consideration in 2006, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences anticipates there will be a full slate of five nominees in the Animated Feature Film category.

The slate usually has three nominees, except for in 2002 when there were enough qualified features in the running to par down the field to five nominees.

Disney Draws Up Animated Live-Action Flick

Disney has bought the rights to ANIMATED AMERICAN, a live-action/animation hybrid that deals with the issue of teens trying to fit in, VARIETY reports. Producers will be Bob Cooper's Landscape Ent. and ImageMovers partners Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke.

Peter Ackerman (ICE AGE) is set to write the screenplay, which will follow an animated outsider, who lives in a live-action world and must deal with his girlfriend leaving him while hes away at sea.

Austin’s D7 Studios Releases Animated Series Free Online at D7.Com

Austin-based D7 Studios, an independent animation company that completed the first-ever animated Coca-Cola/NASCAR commercial for the Daytona 500 in 2005, is releasing the first chapter of its new animated show, D7PEACEMAKER REVELATION, in hi-def for download, and broadcast on the Web for free in a scaled-down version at www.D7.com.

Created independently, the series features an anime style with an American plot. Written, directed, and animated solely by Arik Renee Avila, the series is produced by Tony Hobdy and Robin Bookwalter.
